Gloves and shoelaces won't be the only pink items on the gridiron this week as the NFL continues its recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Referees working Sunday's game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets at MetLife Stadium will call penalties by throwing pink flags. The move to ditch yellow and go pink was the brainchild of a fifth-grader, who suggested the idea in a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Just out of curiosity, does any of this actually help fight breast cancer?

It advances the noble cause of lip service.

Sometime I'd like to see someone calculate the cost of all the pink crap, then have the NFL donate twice that to researchers and not bother getting the pink stuff.

If you are the kind of person who tunes into NFL, do you NEED to be reminded to think about women's breasts? :)

Seriously, you're right. I suppose this kind of things is ok as a one off stunt, but it is just getting a bit silly. There is a time and a place for everything, and although breast cancer is a very serious issue, I don't want to think about it ALL the time.

“All I do is think about women’s breasts every time a pink car goes by.”

Yeah, it’s terrible to think about women’s breasts.

I am going to vomit.
I am sick of pink, I am sick of pink, I am sick of pink.
Just got back from the market, and everyone was dressed in pink, there were pink balloons, pink decorations, I am sick of pink.
I am sick of pink.

Roger Goodell is a poosy. Pete Rozelle never would have put up with this.

“You tune in to the NFL and they want to remind you to think only about women’s breasts. Sorta sick in a way.”

Yeah, as if us guys really NEED the NFL to remind us to think about boobs. ;)

Didn’t he hug players on stage at the NFL Draft once there were chosen?

Y’know, because THAT’ll make all the difference and get every female to do a breast self-exam, find the definitive cure, and, most important - wait for it - make us all feel GOOD about ourselves.

It’s a serious disease(s). Enough with the “awareness” already!

When do you cross the line from being concerned about breast cancer to trying to profit from it?

I could see some ad executive saying "Cut the red dye by 2/3, slap a pink ribbon on this run of the label and the chicks will go wild buying it because 'we care'. Put the dye savings into our department's gin budget."

I believe it falls under the catchall category of "Raising awareness".

But it could also be "Making a difference", "Having an impact", or "Focusing attention" - it's so hard to tell these days.

A more accurate description would be "wasting resources on self-congratulatory nonsense".

Geez, with all this shark jumping the NFL is gonna look like a circus. I’m all for breast cancer awareness, but, seriously, we are aware already. Really NFL. Really. Enough already.
