Police have identified a 17-year-old Somers High School student, seriously injured(update: died Thursday at Baystate) in a single-car crash on Prospect Street Wednesday night, as Nicholas Coleman.

Coleman, who lives on Concord Terrace, was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. His condition was not immediately available.

Police believe the accident, in which Coleman lost control and hit a tree near 615 Prospect St., could have occurred as early as 6:30 p.m. Officers, canvassing the neighborhood, found a resident who may have heard the crash around 6:30 or 6:35 p.m., Sgt. Patrick Manley said.

“One of the neighbors heard a racing engine and a kind of a thud and he looked out and didn’t see anything,” Manley said.

A neighborhood resident discovered the wrecked 1995 Suburu Legacy off the road and against a tree shortly after 8 p.m., Manley said.

Prayers for the family and friends. I'm hoping it turns out the crash occurred closer to 8 and not 6:30. Horrible way to go to wait 90 minutes before someone called.

I'm very sorry about this young man's death.

I noticed this clause in the article;

in which Coleman lost control and hit a tree

because it's so unusual to see any agency attributed to the driver. A more common phrasing would be something like, "The vehicle went out of control and hit a tree."

Knowing the way the MSM reports on things, if he had been driving a SUV they would have blamed the car. However, he was driving a Subaru and for some reason Libs love Subarus.

Oh, good point. I didn’t register the make of the car.

I have three young drivers in my family. “Teenager - one car accident” is my nightmare.

How sad. I know this road well. My aunt lived in East Longmeadow and my mom resided with and worked for a family on Hall Hill Rd. (the name changes once you cross the CT. state line.) Many of the homes sit a ways off the road at that point. Just the same, it is a two lane road with few streetlights. My sympathies to this young man’s family. Subarus are among the safest cars on the road; it is why I drive one as did my daughter.

According to the map posted at the linked article, the crash occurred just over the line into EL. At that point the houses are close to the road.
