SIERRA VISTA — Late Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever had an elevated blood alcohol content above the legal limit at the time of his death, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday evening.

Sounds though like he was a good guy, well respected and loved. RIP.
Almost four times the legal limit going over 60 on a dirt road and not buckled in. Genius.
the “legal limit” is either 0.5 mg or 1.0, depending on where you live.
An average sized guy gets 0.5 from one recent drink.
So he had a couple.
A lot of guys doing this are under emotional distress: they are in despair, have a few drinks, and start racing the car to let off steam, then they either aim at a tree to kill themselves under an impulse, or more commonly, lose control and hit a tree.

After about 50mph seat belts won’t do you any good. They’ll only hold you in place for the EMT’s to find you.
Legal limit in AZ is 0.08%; and the coroner placed it at 0.26%. That is just over 3 times the limit.
The original story, the morning after the accident, said that he was buckled in. At least, that’s the way I remember it.
I’ve been on roads just like that in other parts of the state. 60MPH is sorta doable until you hit a dip or rut. Then you’re in trouble.
This has left a huge hole in our hearts here in Cochise County.
The most shocking item in the autopsy report is Dever's blood alcohol content (BAC), reported to be an astounding 0.291 percent.
Based on the results of a Virginia Tech study on the effects of alcohol consumption, in order to achieve a BAC of 0.291, Dever who weighed close to 175 pounds, would have needed to consume about 12 (12 0z.) beers or 12 (1.5 oz) shots of 80 proof liquor in a relatively short period of time.
Given the fact that Dever had been in law enforcement for 30 years and had worked numerous traffic accidents where alcohol had been a factor, the notion that this very highly respected sheriff sat behind the wheel of a vehicle downing drinks, one-behind the other, seems a bit implausible.
This reporter also spoke with a close associate and friend of Dever's, who claimed on condition of anonymity that in all the years that the two had been friends, he had never seen the sheriff consume more`than two drinks in an evening.

For underage drivers....under 21....any detectable alcohol is a DUI .02.....

In 1961, at 19 y/o, I was home on leave from the Navy for Christmas. I was driving my dad’s ‘58 Impala about 2am and was waaaay over what LATER ON became the “legal limit”.
I fell asleep, veered to the right through a ditch which launched the car into the air. I hit a 30-40 foot oak tree about ten feet above the ground. This tree was in the front yard of a house and only about 15 feet from the house. The tree was completely uprooted.
No seat belt and no air bag at that time. Horn ring gashed my head and dash (shoved back about a foot) cut my legs slightly. .......Car was deemed to be totaled, although not even a single headlight was broken. The car hit the big oak tree dead center and, unlike today’s cars, was made of real metal (a true safety feature). ...No charges by police.

I live nearby MADD headquarters (Irving TX) and they are hated by clear thinking people as much as the Code Pink idiots. They have succeeded, however, in getting local politicians to support their views.
I think drunk drivers should be curtailed and prosecuted, but the people in MADD are over the top with their crap.
The woman who founded MADD left it before the end of the 20th Century because she said it had become a neo-prohibitionist movement which was never her intention. She later went on to lobby on behalf of bars and breweries.
I have hosted events where the alcohol flowed pretty freely; with Sheriff Dever in attendance. I have never seen him have one drink, let alone a dozen. The BAC issue has struck me as very odd, as well.
Interesting.
If most of us had to live on that border and try to fight the feds to protect our citizens, we’d all have alcohol in our systems 24/7!
