A robbery attempt went awry when a local business owner pointed a gun at the suspect's head.

The owner of Club Billiards was getting out of his truck around 10 a.m. Monday in the 900 block of W. Douglas when a man came up to him.

"He had his hands in his pockets. He stated he had a gun and wanted the victim's wallet," said Wichita Police Lieutenant Doug Nolte. "The victim stated that he also had a gun, at which time he produced a handgun and pointed it at the suspect's head."

Most likely, the robber was faking having a gun. As happens in about 95% of the cases, when the victim produced a gun, the robber ran off.

When the perp said he had a gun and also had his hand in his pocket, the owner had the right to shoot him. A perp can shoot you simply by having his finger on the trigger and firing from (inside) his pocket at the owner. I would say the owner would have been in his rights to pull the trigger when he had it pointed at the perp. The key element is survival and you don't have a second chance if you hesitate.

Tactical mistake. The business owner violated Tuco’s rule.

“When you have to shoot, shoot. Don’t talk.”

In this case, while it would be tempting to put one between their horns, they might actually have a gun in their pocket, so use a low draw, below your belt line, and double tap them right in the belt buckle.

Tactically this is best, because at close range, people’s attention on themselves and others is much greater above the belt line, so it might buy you a few milliseconds. An interesting phenomenon you should investigate.
