Mitt Romney Worked As a Garbage Man (AFSCME ad failure)

Yesterday, AFSCME put out a rather silly ad featuring Mitt Romney’s former garbage collector in La Jolla, California. The ad begins:

My name is Richard Hayes, and I pick up Mitt Romney’s trash. We’re kind of like the invisible people. He doesn’t realize that the service we provide – if it wasn’t for us, it would be a big health issue, us not picking up trash.

Get the sledgehammer message? Mitt Romney doesn’t understand! Romney could have no idea about quotidien things such as trash collection because his wealth and detachment prevent him from having to know what life is like for blue-collar workers such as Mr. Hayes.

There’s just one problem with this, and it lies on page 251 of Mitt Romney’s book, No Apology:

During my campaign for governor, I decided to spend a day every few weeks doing the jobs of other people in Massachusetts. Among other jobs, I cooked sausages at Fenway Park, worked on asphalt paving crew, stacked bales of hay on a farm, volunteered in an emergency room, served food at a nursing home, and worked as a child-care assistant. I’m often asked which was the hardest job – it’s child care, by a mile.

One day I gathered trash as a garbage collector. I stood on that little platform at the back of the truck, holding on as the driver navigated his way through the narrow streets of Boston. As we pulled up to traffic lights, I noticed that the shoppers and businesspeople who were standing only a few feet from me didn’t even see me. It was as if I was invisible. Perhaps it was because a lot of us don’t think garbage men are worthy of notice; I disagree – anyone who works that hard deserves our respect. – I wasn’t a particularly good garbage collector: at one point, after filling the trough at the back of the truck, I pulled the wrong hydraulic lever. Instead of pushing the load into the truck, I dumped it onto the street. Maybe the suits didn’t notice me, but the guys at the construction site sure did: “Nice job, Mitt,” they called. “Why don’t you find an easier job?” And then they good-naturedly came down and helped me pick up my mess.

Here’s Romney working as a garbage collector:

Lol - it makes you pure evil.

Seriously, what is it these days that everyone needs to be adored for doing their jobs?

I say just go to work, do your job to the best of your ability, and collect your pay cheque. If you’re cheerful and do a good job, you are going to get some positive feedback at some point, but even if you don’t, so what?

Just do it for the sake of doing a good job. That in itself is reward. God’s watching - He knows what you’re doing.

Frankly, I have never seen my garbage men because I am AT WORK when they come here. If I do someday see them, I will say hello and thank them. Maybe the guy in the video picks up in Dem neighborhoods where people are at home living off those of us who pay Fed taxes.

The major difference here is that if BO had been the target of such an ad, they would have come up with some ‘notes or a diary’ in a book to be published that BO had done it, or had thought about doing it.

At least the Romney book is a couple of years old.

I think there is a bigger point here about what kind of leadership Mitt practices. How many other Govs or Presidents, or even mayors, take the time to get to know first hand what it is like on the front lines like that.

My favorite part is where the garbageman says “People would come out, shake our hands, hug us and thank us for the job we were doing.” Who does that? NOBODY! Total lying sack of um, garbage.

At Christmas-time, I tape a card with $20 in it on one of the can lids. That's it.

Then he’ll have some experience with what he’ll be doing when he gets to be President.

Hug a garbage man? I am thankful that someone is doing that job, but a hug? I was one of the last stops for a semi-rural route, i would leave a six pack for my guys if i was having them do a bit of extra lifting. but no hugs!
