NAACP takes bid to ensure US ex-con voting to UN

The NAACP is taking to the U.N. its effort to ensure that all former convicted felons in the United States can vote.

A delegation from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was holding meetings Tuesday at the United Nation's Geneva office in part to press the world body to send observers to the U.S. for this year's elections.

The diplomatic push comes against the backdrop of a related — and vigorous — debate about requirements in some states for would-be voters to provide proper identification before they can cast ballots.

The NAACP says nearly 6 million U.S. citizens are barred from voting because of previous felony convictions. According to The Sentencing Project, an advocacy group that seeks policies to make it easier for felons to vote, the United States has the world's largest prison population — 2.2 million — and more than 60 percent of inmates are ethnic or racial minorities.

In a statement, the NAACP said it sent a first delegation to the U.N. Human Rights Council in March "in the face of a mounting attack on voting rights in the United States." This week's visit followed up on that trip.

Hilary Shelton, a NAACP vice president, said the issue of voting rights could affect the outcome of the election between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

obama needs all those votes from the COLORED PEOPLE. Especially since they are all innocent.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall at an NAACP meeting and shout "COPS !!". It would sound like the kitchen staff dropped all the silverware, plates, pots and pans, with all the guns, knives and brass knuckles being tossed to the floor. (ala 'Crocodile Dundee')

“UN has no jurisdiction”

Tell Obama. He thinks he’s kicking it upstairs.

And if the felons get to vote, it will primarily dilute the voting power of the other members of the community... the decent, law-abiding minorities trying to survive in dangerous, crime-ridden neighborhoods.

The NAACP is sending Rosa Parks to the back of the bus.

They should apply the same pressure to assure that our warriors get the same voting rights.

LOL! An ID to check out a LIBRARY book! As if half of Obama’s voters even know what a book is!

Let’s get down to the basics. If you think robbing a liquor store is a good way to make money, then you aren’t smart enough to vote. Case closed. And don’t tell me that after you’ve served your time that you’re any smarter. Anyone who knows a crook knows that. Yeah, yeah, lots of sob stories, but the reality is that if you make a bad enough choice to land you in prison, it’s not an anomaly. You have made lots of bad choices, and using your vote to make another one is not only bad for you but for everyone else.
