Ex-prof gets life in prison for meeting rampage

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A former university professor has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing three of her colleagues and wounding three others during a faculty meeting.

The jury deliberated for about 20 minutes before convicting Amy Bishop on Monday. Amy Bishop, a former professor at the University of Alabama in Hunstville, showed no reaction as the verdict was read.

Circuit Judge Alan Mann then imposed the life sentence. Bishop did not speak in court.

The Harvard-educated biologist avoided a death sentence by pleading guilty earlier this month to the shootings at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

However, she was still required to have a brief trial under Alabama law because she admitted to a capital murder charge.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A police investigator testified Monday during the murder trial of a former university professor that the woman denied having anything to do with the rampage that left three of her colleagues dead and three others wounded.

Investigator Charlie Gray and professor Debra Moriarty were the only witnesses to testify during the brief trial Monday for Amy Bishop. Bishop already has pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, but state law requires a trial because it was a capital charge.

Gray also said police believe Bishop opened fire during the faculty meeting because she was angry over being denied tenure, which effectively ended her career at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

"She would say, `It didn't happened. I wasn't there. It wasn't me,'" Gray said.

Of course the actual title of this AP article is “Ex-prof gets life in prison for meeting rampage”. Not “It didn’t happened. I wasn’t there. It wasn’t me” ... Leftist Murderer U of A Professor Gets Life”.

I checked because I knew AP would never ever state that a murderer was a Leftist. Forget the fact that she was obsessed with Obama as her own family member revealed.

She should get the death sentence just for that hairdo alone.

With the revelations about Warren, Obama, and others, the Harvard Alumni news must make for some exciting reading.

Veritas, not so much.

Why did Amy Bishop repeatedly say “It didn’t happen. There’s no way .... they are still alive” in the first interviews after her arrest?

Angling to get off for reason of insanity?

Justice delayed is justice denied. Why did this case take so long to adjudicate? This shooting seemed a very long time ago.

“Angling to get off for reason of insanity?”

But if she’s so damn smart, why commit this motiveless crime to begin with?

There are always two sides to every story, and what we have not heard is Amy Bishop’s side of the story, nor will we ever:

—Judge Mann asks Bishop if there is anything she would like to say. Roy Miller says he will speak for her....

Less than twenty four hours after being sentenced, she was moved to prison. Why the haste?

Department of Corrections officials said it typically takes 30 days for an inmate to transfer to a state prison. ...
On a side note, cameras and interviews with inmates are no longer allowed inside Alabama prisons.

Aren’t people found guilty and sentenced usually whisked away to prison on the spot?

Besides he had time for one more interview, sort of:

My point is that there has been a definite ‘rush to judgement’ in this case. If she was caught more or less red-handed, where exactly is all the evidence against her? The ballistics, forensic, eyewitness evidence, etc? I haven’t seen too much of it. 0nly one of the seven survivors in that room said that Amy Bishop was the shooter. What about the rest? And why, after holding out for two and a half years, would the defendant change her plea to guilty just before trial? Just like Jared Loughner, the Tucson/Giffords gunman. Personally, I am smelling a rat.

Amy Bishop recording casts doubt on former teacher’s claim.
By: Aaron Hutchens
September 26, 2012

A prosecutor says an audio recording casts doubt on Amy Bishop’s claim that she didn’t recall the 2010 shooting that left three people dead at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Madison County District Attorney Rob Broussard tells The Associated Press that authorities have a recording of a jailhouse phone call in which Bishop indicates she remembered at least one thing immediately after the gunfire.

Broussard says Bishop told her husband during the call that she didn’t see him on campus moments after the slaying, even though he was outside the building where she was arrested.

That recording could have been used as evidence if Bishop used an insanity defense. But Bishop pleaded guilty instead to capital murder and attempted murder.

A judge Monday sentenced Bishop to life without parole.
