Ex-prof gets life in prison for meeting rampage

Ex-prof gets life in prison for meeting rampage

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A former university professor has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing three of her colleagues and wounding three others during a faculty meeting.

The jury deliberated for about 20 minutes before convicting Amy Bishop on Monday. Amy Bishop, a former professor at the University of Alabama in Hunstville, showed no reaction as the verdict was read.

Circuit Judge Alan Mann then imposed the life sentence. Bishop did not speak in court.

The Harvard-educated biologist avoided a death sentence by pleading guilty earlier this month to the shootings at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

However, she was still required to have a brief trial under Alabama law because she admitted to a capital murder charge.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A police investigator testified Monday during the murder trial of a former university professor that the woman denied having anything to do with the rampage that left three of her colleagues dead and three others wounded.

Investigator Charlie Gray and professor Debra Moriarty were the only witnesses to testify during the brief trial Monday for Amy Bishop. Bishop already has pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, but state law requires a trial because it was a capital charge.

Gray also said police believe Bishop opened fire during the faculty meeting because she was angry over being denied tenure, which effectively ended her career at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

"She would say, `It didn't happened. I wasn't there. It wasn't me,'" Gray said.

FILE - This Feb. 13, 2010, file booking photo provided by the Huntsville, Ala., Police Department shows college professor Amy Bishop, charged with capital murder in the Feb. 12, 2010 shooting deaths of three faculty members at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Bishop pleaded guilty to capital murder charges in an agreement that will send to her prison for the rest of her life and make her ineligible for the death penalty. A judge scheduled jury selection for Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, as a trial is still required under Alabama law because Bishop admitted to a capital charge of murder.

She’ll be out on parole in less than 10 years and get a cushy job at some other left-wing nuthouse. By that time, it will be accepted knowledge that she never did it, was never there, and besides the CIA made her do it.

FWIW, I think she was influenced by that cliche TV show character of the great scientist who suddenly "snaps," has a psychotic episode, trashes his lab, kills a collegue... and then acts like an amazed bystander, claims to be as shocked as everyone else, and pretends to remember nothing.

I remember this kind of character appearing a couple of times on prime-time television shows back in the seventies.

I think she is pure evil, and I think she believed she could pull this act off. Quite possibly she believed she could pull it off again; I think she might have used it to get away with the murder of her brother back when she was in her early 20s.

Her politically-connected mother got her off that time. She's got the Alabama vicitim's blood on her hands too.

I'll venture a totally WAG that her mother is a big-time liberal. Could be totally wrong, I'll be the first to admit.

It was almost for sure that it was she and her hubby who sent a bomb to her professor at Harvard when he would not recommend her for another year in the post-grad program back in the '90s. This was after she blew her brother away with a shotgun.

And her research was a joke...she kept writing the same paper over and over again. This woman was a fraud aside from being a homicidal maniac.

The Unanswered Questions of this case:

—0f the 12 people in the conference room at the time of the shooting, three are dead, two were seriously injured and might not remember much, which leaves seven witnesses. 0nly one of these, a Professor Moriarity, has been publicly interviewed and has identified Bishop as the shooter. Where are the other interviews of survivors, and why haven’t three of the unharmed witnesses even been identified?

—Why did Amy Bishop repeatedly say “It didn’t happen. There’s no way .... they are still alive” in the first interviews after her arrest? What did she mean by that?

—In the first hours after the shooting, the local newspapers website posted a photo of another person being led away in handcuffs from the scene. Who was this person, and why do commentators who did see this photo say it looked like a man wearing women’s clothing? Why was he/she carrying ‘shells’ in her/his pockets? Where did they come from? What caliber were they? Did they smell like they has recently been fired? Were all the expended shells from the shooting recovered at the crime scene?

—Is there any of the ubiquitous video evidence that is everywhere nowadays that places her at the scene? None has been released.

==Was Gun Shot Residue evidence found on her hands? Were her fingerprints found on the weapon recovered? Did the recovered weapon smell like it had recently been fired? Can all the slugs and expended shell cases be traced back to the weapon allegedly used?

—What was the motive? They have implied that Amy Bishop was angry over being denied tenure, but officially speaking they did not posit any motive. What did Amy herself have to say?

Well, one witness said she seemed surprised when her gun jammed or ran out of ammo, which gave them the opportunity to rush her and push her out of the room. I think, had she not left any witnesses, she planned to say she missed the meeting, hoping everyone would believe it was another school shooting incident by a student.

From anarchist-org.forum:

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (El Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional) is an anarcho communist army that is based in Mexico, mainly the poorest state in Mexico, Chiapas. In 1994, January 1st, they started their revolution and it has been increasingly successful throughout the years. Today, they are attempting non-violent struggles because the people told them too — they are truly an army of the people. However, both the people and their army are realizing how unsuccessful that tactic is.

Their ideology, Zapatismo, is a mixture of indigenous teachings, autonomism, anarchism and communism. Although other revolutions are going on in the world (like the Southern African anarcho communist movement), the Zapatista revolution was deemed the first modern revolution of our time and it’s bringing hope to people not only in Mexico, but around the world.”

Of course the actual title of this AP article is “Ex-prof gets life in prison for meeting rampage”. Not “It didn’t happened. I wasn’t there. It wasn’t me” ... Leftist Murderer U of A Professor Gets Life”.

I checked because I knew AP would never ever state that a murderer was a Leftist. Forget the fact that she was obsessed with Obama as her own family member revealed.

But if she’s so damn smart, why commit this motiveless crime to begin with?

There are always two sides to every story, and what we have not heard is Amy Bishop’s side of the story, nor will we ever:

http://whnt.com/2012/09/24/courtroom-blog-amy-bishop-trial/
—Judge Mann asks Bishop if there is anything she would like to say. Roy Miller says he will speak for her....

Less than twenty four hours after being sentenced, she was moved to prison. Why the haste?

Department of Corrections officials said it typically takes 30 days for an inmate to transfer to a state prison. ...
On a side note, cameras and interviews with inmates are no longer allowed inside Alabama prisons.

My point is that there has been a definite ‘rush to judgement’ in this case. If she was caught more or less red-handed, where exactly is all the evidence against her? The ballistics, forensic, eyewitness evidence, etc? I haven’t seen too much of it. 0nly one of the seven survivors in that room said that Amy Bishop was the shooter. What about the rest? And why, after holding out for two and a half years, would the defendant change her plea to guilty just before trial? Just like Jared Loughner, the Tucson/Giffords gunman. Personally, I am smelling a rat.
