Anderson Cooper admits that CNN found slain American ambassador's journal inside U.S. consulate in Libya and 'secretly' used it in reporting (full Title)

.•CNN found Ambassador Christopher Stevens' personal journal on the floor at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi
•Journal consisted of seven handwritten pages in a hard-bound book
•Network says it notified Stevens' family at once and handed over the journal

CNN host Anderson Cooper admitted on Friday that the network had come across the late Ambassador Christopher Stevens' personal journal and used parts of it in its reporting without disclosing the source.

On Wednesday on his show Anderson Cooper 360, the journalist told Senator John McCain that 'a source familiar with Ambassador Stevens' thinking told us that in the months before his death he talked about being worried about the never-ending security threats that he was facing in Benghazi, and specifically about the rise in Islamist extremism and growing al Qaeda presence.' Cooper added that 'the source also mentioned [Stevens] being on an al Qaeda hit list.'

Two days later, Cooper acknowledged that the network had obtained Stevens' journal, and that some of the information regarding the late ambassador’s thought process in the months leading to the deadly September 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was drawn from his entries.

Based on the excerpts from the article you posted in #60, Stevens knew what he was dealing with, took huge risks, which ultimately & unfortunately ended in his own demise.

There is no way, I’ve said before, the U.S. can protect, even its top officials, every time & all the time, in hot spots such as Libya, even with armed security.

My take would be that Stevens was not risk averse. But what reward, recognition, or incentive was Stevens looking or hoping for as compensation for such a tremendous risk?

The rebellion began as anti-Gadhafi, not pro alqaeda. He was well liked and respected among most of the rebels. As time went on, the alqaeda-types joined more and he was not liked by them.

Supposedly, he was invited to Benghazi for a dedication of a cultural center and to sign some papers relating to other business.

The reports now are saying that there were about 100 militants attacking the consulate with some heavy arms. They used deisel fuel to set the buildings on fire at the beginning of the attack. I don’t know how many consulates in the world could withstand an attack like that. This wasn’t a fortified embassy.

Somebody (a Libyan) on the ‘inside’ with sympathies to the militant alqaeda types, tipped them off.

Thanks for posting the links.
Utter incompetence.
Maybe this CNN/diary story will get some traction and the lack of State Dept security procedures will become an issue this week on the news. Maybe ....

I’m hoping the family members of the dead start to speak out against the State Dept & the White House.

It's not outside reality that the Tripoli CNN office got a call on the 8th or 9th about how if they wanted a good story, to be outside the Benghazi consulate the morning of the 11th. How often have they been willing to follow the bad guys to get a shot of them ambushing our troops? I seem to recall at least once in Iraq or the 'Stan. Naturally, since they weren't promptly taken out and shot, they figure if they are careful, they can scoop the competition.

Your comments bring 2 mind 2 incidents. (1) Wolf Blitzer admitting that CNN covered up Saddam Hussein's torture and murder in Iraq to maintain their Baghdad Bureau. (2) Mike Wallace and Peter Jennings in a video clip on Youtube (from a townhall discussion or similar panel talk) saying that they are reporters first and above and beyond any loyalties to America. If they learned of an impending attack on US forces, they would not relay the word to Americans to prevent the attack. That is emphatically stated by their own admission in the youtube clip.

The Mercurial Girl, Madonna, has for several years been dating a devout young, bare-chested Frnch Muslim entertainer Brahim Zaibat She’s infaturated, so calling Obama for what he clearly is - a Muslim - is high praise from the Mercurial Girl. Her adopted kids are Black, so the deep thinking Madonna announces that the Half-Black Muslim deserves her “thoughtful” endorsement. After she was read the riot act by Obama’s handlers, who still try to pass him off as non-Muslim, she says, “Yeh, hee hee, I just said that to be ironic.” If Romney wins, maybe Mormonism will be her next passion - all that clean living, plus Jesus right there in the middle, might have an appeal to the aging Madonna as she retraces a path to her Catholic roots.
