Newt Gingrich: Akin won ballot spot in `fair fight,' GOP should back him
St. Louis Post Dispatch ^ | 091912 | Kevin McDermott

Posted on 09/21/2012 10:16:02 AM PDT by Fred

ST. LOUIS • Newt Gingrich is coming to St. Louis Monday for a Todd Akin fundraiser because he wants “to tell the people of Missouri” that they have the right to stand by the Republican Senate candidate of their choice, regardless of what the party's leaders tell them.

In a phone interview today with the Post-Dispatch, Gingrich, the former House Speaker and presidential candidate, said the controversy surrounding Akin isn't the point. “The people of Missouri picked him to be their nominee in a fair fight.”

He also warned what others have said: That for the GOP to throw in the towel on the Missouri Senate seat, as the party's national leaders appear to be doing, will probably mean losing the Senate.

“I don't see how the Republicans are going to win the Senate if they throw away a seat like Missouri.”

Gingrich will attend a St. Louis fundraiser Monday for Akin, the Senate candidate. It's an event that may be at least as important to the struggling campaign for its message as for its money.

Newt is 100% correct. Akin made a mistake. Apologized. Move on.

Good for Newt, and DeMint.

Ras had this race within 5 points or so, with McCaskill failing to reach 50%. It’s winnable, with some financial support.

Of course we should back him, he’s a decent guy and is the Republican nominee. That doesn’t mean that he can win, he can’t. He would have done the country a favor if he had bowed out. He wouldn’t, so the people of Missouri are screwed.

Atkin came across as very seasoned, knowledgeable, and confident in today’s debate. He beat McCaskill like a dumb and stubborn donkey. He was portrayed by some as some knuckle dragging, ignorant doofus and he destroyed that image in today’s debate. His closing statement was worthy of Reagan. It would be sheer insanity not to support this rock solid conservative at this point.

Has anyone else seen Todd Akin in the ‘Monumental’ documentary by Kirk Cameron? His part is very minimal and the documentary is excellent.

The ELITE Repubs in DC must control who runs for any seat in Congress. No one should be allowed to run that they haven’t chosen. They told him to quit and he didn’t, so they will do aLL they can to defeat him.

That's because he suffers from conservative appeasement syndrome in trying to explain his moral position on abortion - or anything else for that matters.

When confronted with a question about abortion, a true conservative would say “ I categorically oppose it on moral grounds” and leave it at that. There is no use in arguing with media Democrat shills on the value of your position. When you argue with morally bereft people, they invariably bring you down to their level, and then beat you with experience.

Morals? Stand you ground as you would with an intruder in your home. You only need assert the firmness of your position and then deal unapologetically with the aftermath.

I heard Akin was a little too conservative (a squishy moderate would have been preferred), a little too independent in not always taking marching orders from the GOPe so at the first opportunity they dumped him. All I can say is ... if Akin loses & we lose the Senate by one seat, the GOPe needs to pay for this cr@p and I mean pay big time.

"They told him to quit and he didn’t, so they will do aLL they can to defeat him."

Seems to be what this has become about. It'd sure be nice if they could act like grown-ups and quietly support this guy.

And good for Newt. He was on Greta last night sounding fantastic. If only Mitt could preach like (good) Newt.......*sigh*.

I disagree. The comment is old news to most folks. He's within 5 (with NO financial support) points, Romney will win the state, and with some financial support (Newt, DeMint, hopefully Rove's SuperPac will re-enter the fray), he has a 50/50 shot, IMO

He won taking money from Democrats and Karl Rove. Fine hje won. But then he blew it. Conservatives didn’t force him to make that mistake. If he gets elected, he will represent the left.
