McCaskill and Akin will square off in first debate for U.S. Senate (TODAY -LIVE STREAMING)

The nation is closely watching the U.S. Senate race in Missouri that pits Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill against her Republican challenger U.S. Rep. Todd Akin. The two will face off for their first debate today (Sept. 21) at 10:45 a.m. in Columbia, Mo.

McCaskill, 59, is seeking her second six-year term in the Senate after previously serving as state auditor. Akin, 65, is challenging McCaskill, rather than seek re-election to the 2nd Congressional District in St. Louis, to which he first won election in 2000.

The race shot into the national spotlight last month after Akin remarked to a local television reporter when speaking about abortion that with a “legitimate rape the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

He has since backed off the statement saying that he misspoke, but has rejected pleas from Republican leaders to drop out of the race. Republicans were hoping to unseat McCaskill in November, bringing them one step closer to holding a majority in the U.S. Senate.

Not all Republicans have shied away from supporting Akin. Former presidential candidate Newt Gingrich will be in Missouri on Sept. 24 at a fundraiser for Akin. The $500-a-plate luncheon will be held at Trattoria Branica restaurant in Kirkwood. The invitation-only event is expected to be a small gathering of about 100 people.

“I think Todd Akin was the choice of the people in Missouri and Todd Akin has publicly apologized,” Gingrich recently told ABC News. “I just think people ought to be a little cautious about saying the voters of Missouri don’t count.”

No matter how Akin does...the PhonyCons will be on here en masse telling us “he needs to step down”.....”he hurts the pro-life movement”....”he beat the GOP insider candidate”...

Go get ‘em, Todd

I hope he rips her a new one in this debate and talks circles around her. I’m disgusted beyond anger that the GOP has turned on him. Go Newt.

Good Luck, Todd - and beat the heck out of her on Nov. 6.

It`s all ready been decided that Akin has lost debate before it has even started.

Same deal with all the Obama Romney debates, and the Biden Ryan debate, It has already been decided that Obama and Biden won the debates.

Does not matter how poorly Obama,Biden and McCaskil do, the MSM is going to say the dems all won.

They said Kerry and Gore won all debates.

Sad truth here is that despite talk radio, the internet etc, MSM still informs and dictates to the masses.

We are doomed, The American people are stupid (the masses that believe the polls etc and vote Democrat)

Keep your fingers crossed. The problem with Akin is not his core beliefs or his conservative principles, it’s the fact that the link between his brain and his mouth shuts down at inconvenient moments. The rape comment. Calling student loans a stage 3 cancer. Saying the government has no business providing subsidized student lunches. He has a history of trying to explain the right subject in exactly the wrong way and if that happens during the debate then it’ll be good for weeks of McCaskill commercials. The debate could help his campaign or it could scuttle it for good. Even odds either way.

This is great news!! Newt should be able to give Todd a significant boost to his campaign against McCaskill. By throwing his support behind Todd and physically being in Missouri sends a much needed signal to all Missourians that he has a highly recognized and proven conservative leader behind him. Missouri voters, if they had the chance to vote for Newt instead of having a caucus do it for them, would have given Missouri to Newt. I am hopeful that Newt can also draw in much needed donations for Todd by his appearance Monday.

I have had a feeling all along that Missourians will remember how Claire sold us out to Obama and do the right thing come Nov. 6th. If Newt targets all his attention to helping Todd in these final days by helping Todd attack the Obama clone (McCaskill), he will win big and give us a true conservative Senator for Missouri.

This has given me even more assurance that my prayers are being answered.

He just has to stick by his solid conservative beliefs, and votes... and bring up Omabacare... If he does that, he’s right back on track.
