Obama slammed on Fast and Furious in Spanish-language TV interview: Shouldn’t you ‘fire’ Holder? [VIDEO]
Interviewers on the Spanish-language television network Univision grilled President Barack Obama about the Operation Fast and Furious scandal plaguing his administration in an interview Thursday.
“You told me during an interview that you and Mr. Holder did not authorize the Fast and Furious operation that allowed 2,000 weapons from the United States into Mexico and they were in the drug trafficking [cartels'] hands,” Univision co-host Jorge Ramos asked Obama, according to a translator, during the interview. “I think that up to 100 Mexicans might have died and also American agent Brian Terry. There’s a report that 14 agents were responsible for the operation but shouldn’t the attorney general, Eric Holder, he should have known about that and if he didn’t, should you fire him?”
Obama responded with similar talking points his administration has used time and again.
“Well, first of all, I think it’s important to understand that the Fast and Furious program was a field-initiated program, begun under the previous administration,” Obama said. “When Eric Holder found out about it, he discontinued it. We assigned an inspector general to do a thorough report that was just issued — confirming that in fact Eric Holder did not know about this, that he took prompt action and that the people who did initiate this were held accountable. But, what I think is most important is recognizing that we’ve got a challenge in terms of weapons flowing south, and the strategy that was pursued out of Arizona, obviously, was completely wrongheaded. Those folks who were responsible have been held accountable. The question now is, how do we move forward with a strategy that will actually work?”

As I understand it, most of the money came from the FBI and DEA.
Now, I wonder how a "field-initiated program" by "low level" ATF agents managed to gain the complete cooperation of both the FBI and the DEA. And how the guy who appears to have actually been in charge, Dennis Burke, wasn't ATF at all, but a U.S. Attorney. That sounds like it would take somebody high up in the DOJ.
Not to mention the necessary cooperation of the Border Patrol and ICE -- which would take somebody high up in Homeland Security.

Local radio (Roger Hedgecock) just played text of Holder speech and also a Robert Gibbs audio, both acknowledging the setting up of the program and prior to its ascent into notoriety.
Not to mention that, because this operation was supposedly to involve a foreign country, DOJ just somehow magically didn't come up with a decision not to gain assent from the Department of State lest a very ugly turf battle ensue. No, the DOS people had to have their blinders on for this to have gone on for very long, especially with Hillary! wailing about the bulk of the guns coming into Mexico having originated in the USA.

dont forget about cankles and the state dept that had to, by LAW, authorize the co-ordination of allowing arms across the border, and the wiretaps that *only* get processed at the upper levels of DOJ, which because they are so high up the food chain, automatically initiate their own set of protocols and their priority status is generally known/signed off on in the upper office...
etc...etc...etc...now that the internal investigation stonewall is done, i hop Issa/Grassley have a couple aces in their hand to go all in...

1/14/2009—Introduced.Southwest Border Violence Reduction Act of 2009 - Directs the Attorney General to:
(1) to expand resources for the Project Gunrunner initiative of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to identify, investigate, and prosecute firearms trafficking across the U.S.- Mexico border; and
(2) provide ATF agents, equipment, and training to assist Mexican law enforcement officers in combating firearms trafficking and other criminal enterprises.
