Sheriff Dever dies in single vehicle accident (AZ)

It was learned late Tuesday night that Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever has died in a single vehicle rollover accident in Coconino County.

Details of what occurred are sketchy as of this hour, but the news was confirmed by Cochise County Supervisor Pat Call at about 11 p.m.

Dever was running unopposed in this fall’s election for what would have been his fifth term as sheriff. It is unclear at this time what his sudden passing will mean in the electoral process.

The sheriff was more than a local law enforcement official as he took the lead on the national issue of illegal immigration and its impacts not only on Cochise County, but the state of Arizona and nation. Dever testified before Congress on several ccasions regarding these issues and as stated on the county’s website he had assumed a leadership role in attempting to bring resolution to related local concerns.

He was on the National Sheriff Association’s Board of Directors and was elected because of his strong leadership role in Border Law Enforcement Issues.

The sheriff is a native of Cochise County. He was born and raised in St. David.

He and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of six sons. The oldest serves as a major in the U.S. Army, three work for Arizona law enforcement agencies, one as a firefighter, and one attends college. The sheriff died just four days after his 86-year-old mother, Annie Mae Dever, died of cancer.

According to the county’s website, Dever was a 34-year Cochise County law enforcement veteran. He was elected to his first term as sheriff in 1996, following a 20-year career working in the trenches of Cochise County law enforcement. Entering the profession as a deputy in 1976, Dever rose through the ranks from sergeant to major before successfully seeking political office and being re-elected to a fourth term in 2008.

Ping...

This is a sad day for Cochise County, Arizona, and for those who are fighting to halt the intolerable damage caused by unchecked illegal immigration.

Larry was my friend, and this is not going to be a good day.

I’m sorry to hear of this HiJinx. My sympathies go out to his family, friends, associates, the community he served, and the other localities he impacted favorably by his contributions to various boards and agencies.

We all lost a good friend in that he was trying to address illegal immigration.

When Karen Silkwood died in a similar manner the Left made movies about a fantastic conspiracy to shut her up by the nuclear energy industry.

A story on azcentral this morning said there had been other fatal accidents on that particular road where Dever’s was killed. Probably an accident, but the investigation isn’t over. These days, expect anything.

One car accidents are not unusual in this part of the country with long straight roads that stretch for many miles with nothing to see, drivers tend to get lost in their thoughts and lose control of the vehicle.

A driver that has driven the road many times that has a lot of things on their mind would be a good candidate for such an accident. I've had a few close calls and have to remind myself to stay focused even if there is nothing to see.

We lost a police officer in a single vehicle accident over the weekend. Hodgenville Police Officer Mark Taulbee was pursuing a suspect eastbound on KY-210 when the dispatcher lost contact with him. A backup officer found him wrecked in a field. Apparently he'd lost control, spun, struck an embankment on the driver's side, and went airborne. Even though he was wearing his seatbelt, he was still ejected from the vehicle. He was medevaced to Louisville, but died a few hours later.

Over in Britain, two female police constables were ambushed and killed by a wanted murderer, who used a hand grenade to destroy their vehicle. This was the first incident since the 1960's in which two British police were killed in the same altercation.

A sad week for law enforcement.
