Muslims, Mormons and Liberals Why is it OK to mock one religion but not another? By BRET STEPHENS
'Hasa Diga Eebowai" is the hit number in Broadway's hit musical "The Book of Mormon," which won nine Tony awards last year. What does the phrase mean? I can't tell you, because it's unprintable in a family newspaper.
On the other hand, if you can afford to shell out several hundred bucks for a seat, then you can watch a Mormon missionary get his holy book stuffedwell, I can't tell you about that, either. Let's just say it has New York City audiences roaring with laughter.
The "Book of Mormon"a performance of which Hillary Clinton attended last year, without registering a complaintcomes to mind as the administration falls over itself denouncing "Innocence of Muslims." This is a film that may or may not exist; whose makers are likely not who they say they are; whose actors claim to have known neither the plot nor purpose of the film; and which has never been seen by any member of the public except as a video clip on the Internet.
No matter. The film, the administration says, is "hateful and offensive" (Susan Rice), "reprehensible and disgusting" (Jay Carney) and, in a twist, "disgusting and reprehensible" (Hillary Clinton). Mr. Carney, the White House spokesman, also lays sole blame on the film for inciting the riots that have swept the Muslim world and claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three of his staff in Libya.
So let's get this straight: In the consensus view of modern American liberalism, it is hilarious to mock Mormons and Mormonism but outrageous to mock Muslims and Islam. Why? Maybe it's because nobody has ever been harmed, much less killed, making fun of Mormons.

You are at the right place to mock Mormons.
Holy underwear!
Maybe it’s because nobody has ever been harmed, much less killed, making fun of Mormons.

The main reason is that muzzles will cut our head off.
You do know the guys who wrote the Book of Mormon have also gone after Muslims to the point that the Times Square bomber was attributed as going after them.
http://articles.nydailynews.com/2010-05-02/news/27063303_1_car-bomb-taliban-claim-dutch-filmmaker
They are equal opportunity offenders.
Short answer: One religion brushes off what you say, the other will kill you for it.
Bump
The main reason is that muzzles will cut your head off.
Because Muslims will actually hunt them down and kill them.
As opposed to the “evil” Christians that will just not buy your product and not invite you to their parties.
When it comes to Jews, Hitler kinda ruined that so they have to get their Antisemitism on by directing their hate at Israel or listening to some comic with a Jewish surname mock himself and toss out a few Yiddish words for effect.
Pretty much every other religion (Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism) are to racially homogeneous to attack, and will make you come off as a racial bigot. And besides they dont really hold you to any western standards so it’s all good to adopt superficial aspects of them (Yoga, Ganesha statues, Tibetan prayer flags) so you can feel spiritual without having to go to church.
It’s easy for cowards to mock a religion that turns the other cheek.
The main reason is that muzzies will cut your head off.
Because Muslims attacked the WTO and killed a bunch of people so we must be nice to them.
That's sooooo yesterday. Crucifixion is the new head-chopping.
I highly doubt the left/media will advocate we stop mocking christians if someone do violence in the name of christianity.
They constantly pin violence on tea partiers unfairly yet it never occurred to them that maybe they should start listening and stop mocking tea partiers, but the same does not occur against Muslims
Let’s go back 6 or 8 months and ask some FReepers.
If christians do violence in the name of christianity, the left/media will double down in the mocking and there be hell to pay against all christians
Why do you mention Christians ???
Christians arent mentioned in this article...
only Mormons and Moslems
I think both Mormons and Muslims should be mocked. Both are false, and both will lead one to hell.
The “only” upside to Mormons, at least during this time of history, is that they aren’t killing non-Mormons for mocking them. Of course, if they ever got fully in control...I’m not so sure they wouldn’t become extremely intolerant of descent to their beliefs. When Joseph Smith was “killed by a mob” it was while he was being held in jail for destroying a newspaper printing press that was publishing anti-Mormon material. He also had formed his own private army that answered to him. He gave himself the rank of Lieutenant General when it was customary, and good manners, for leaders of civil militias to hold no higher rank than Major General. The man was something of an egotist and flim flam artist. Of course, Mohammed was even worse...as were/are his followers.
Then there’s the film that just won an award in Vienna, which depicts a woman masturbating with a Crucifix, which went unnoticed by Hillary.
Not to mention the tons of anti-Semitic material out there.
Satan is hard at work and getting enormous support from this Administration and the MSM.
He started his own private Army because President Buchanan decided he didn’t like Mormons and wanted the land they settled so he ordered them completely exterminated. (The Mormon Wars).
Smith wasn’t a saint to say the least, but let’s not make them seem like the villains in that whole thing. You had a case of an over-reaching totalitarian President (a ‘dandy’ Democrat by the way) that would make most people’s Waco nightmares seem like a Saturday afternoon special in comparison.
No Joey Smith started his private army of 5,000 at a time whemn the US army only had 8,00 because he declared war against the US government...
He declared in 1838 he would be like Mohammad in the “Alcoran”
That it would be “Joseph Smith or the Sword”...
at the timne of his death he had petitioned Congress for the money to develop an army of 100,000 trained men...
What did Smith need 100,000 soldiers in his own private standing army for ???
He was not molested or threatened first by the US army in any state the Mormons lived in ...
The article is about islam, mormonism and liberalism, Christians are not mentioned.
Was there a follow up?
Christians arent mentioned in this article...
only Mormons and Moslems
"... it's okay to concede the fundamentalist premise that religious belief ought to be entitled to the highest possible degree of social deferenceexcept when Mormons and sundry Christian rubes are concerned."
Do you consider yourself one of those "sundry Christian rubes", or just a rube?
Well, aren’t you special for pointing that out.
The article was about islam, mormonism and liberalism, Christians weren’t mentioned.
Was there a follow up article mentioning them?
If Mormons blow up the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in NYC will the bombers be blamed or will Trey Parker & Matt Stone be arrested?
Mormons, despite not being seen as Christians (not sure what the official word is on that), would behave exactly like they would when it comes to stuff like this.
Because liberals see America as Christian and because they want to destroy America they want to destroy Christians. Muslims want to destroy America so liberals are for Muslims.
Muslim is not a Religion Islam is their religion if you want to call it a Religion Muslim is a following of Islam ....
Liberals only support people who destroy this country. Anyone who goes out on a rampage because of some silly video is a psychopath.
This country has been about mocking people for a very long time. Don Rickles wouldn't be were he was if he had been Mr. Nice Guy.
Wondered how long it would take in this election cycle before conservatives would be put in the undefensible position of defending Mormonism. Well its here.
When the GOP puts up a Mormon for president, this is what you get. Nice work, all you “moderates” who pushed your man on us in the primaries. A fine kettle of fish indeed.
There is no way on this world I can defend Mormonism.
It was not an extermination notice as we currently define the word. Extermination meant drive them out.
He had destroyed the property of anyone who disagreed with him, he took under aged girls as brides, and other men’s wives....there were really good reasons people didn’t want him around.
He declared himself general and president, his goal was to take over the government.
Extermination Order issued by Governor Boggs on October 27, 1838 was this:
Headquarters of the Militia,
City of Jefferson, Oct. 27, 1838.
Gen. John B. Clark:
Sir:Since the order of this morning to you, directing you to cause four hundred mounted men to be raised within your Division, I have received by Amos Rees, Esq. of Ray county, and Wiley C. Williams, Esq. one of my aids, information of the most appalling character, which entirely changes the face of things, and places the Mormons in the attitude of an open and avowed defiance of the laws, and of having made war upon the people of this State. Your orders are, therefore, to hasten your operations with all possible speed. The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated driven from the state if necessary for the public peacetheir outrages are beyond all description. If you can increase your force, you are authorized to do so to any extent you may consider necessary. I have just issued orders to Maj. Gen. Willock, of Marion county, to raise five hundred men, and to march them to the northern part of Daviess, and there unite with Gen Doniphan, of Clay, who has been ordered with five hundred men to proceed to the same point for the purpose of intercepting the retreat of the Mormons to the north. They have been directed to communicate with you by express, you can also communicate with them if you find it necessary. Instead therefore of proceeding as at first directed to reinstate the citizens of Daviess in their homes, you will proceed immediately to Richmond and then operate against the Mormons. Brig. Gen. Parks, of Ray, has been ordered to have four hundred of his Brigade in readiness to join you at Richmond. The whole force will be placed under your command.
I am very respectfully,
your obt servt,
L. W. Boggs, Commander-in-Chief
mormonism is not seen as Christianity because it is not.
If you mean individual mormons are kind people, I would agree.
Don't forget about "Piss Christ", which was actually funded by the same government that is now decrying and intimidating those that would criticize Islam.
Yes, but my reference is VERY recent!
More recent than the film Obama is lying about being the cause of the violence.
When, to the best of your knowledge, was the last time Mormons killed people for making fun of their religion?
Because Mormons are productive, patriotic tax payers with a sense of humor?
That’s something about the the `religion of peace’ that may be their Achilles heel: mooselimbs are absolutely humorless.
LDS is a cult. I have no trouble treating it like Islam of that is the point, LOL
Yeah Islam, Scientology, Mormonism, Moonies, Hare Krishnas, they all get mocked here.
The most mocked religion by TV and Hollyweirdo’s is Christianity, but leave them out of the title?
Why has MORMONism made (and STILL makes) the claim that ALL of Christianity is apostate and that ONLY the MORMON relgious organization is the respitory of the TRUTH as Jesus proclaimed it?
You are at the right place to show what MORMONism thinks of CHRISTIANITY:
Questions put to Joseph Smith: "'Do you believe the Bible?' [Smith:]'If we do, we are the only people under heaven that does, for there are none of the religious sects of the day that do'. When asked 'Will everybody be damned, but Mormons'? [Smith replied] 'Yes, and a great portion of them, unless they repent, and work righteousness." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 119).Joseph Smith: "for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible" (from Pearl of Great Price 1:12). "What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.270).Brigham Young stated this repeatedly: "When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was grovelling in darkness" (Journal of Discourses 5:73); "The Christian world, so-called, are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God" (Journal of Discourses 8:171); "With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world" (Journal of Discourses 8:199); "And who is there that acknowledges [God's] hand? ...You may wander east, west, north, and south, and you cannot find it in any church or government on the earth, except the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.24); "Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity" (Journal of Discourses 10:230).Orson Pratt proclaimed: "Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the 'whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent" (The Seer, p. 255).Orson Pratt also said: "This great apostasy commenced about the close of the first century of the Christian era, and it has been waxing worse and worse from then until now" (Journal of Discourses, vol.18, p.44) and: "But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be ...But there has been a long apostasy, during which the nations have been cursed with apostate churches in great abundance" (Journal of Discourses , 18:172).President John Taylor stated: "Christianity...is a perfect pack of nonsense...the devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth century." (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.167); "Where shall we look for the true order or authority of God? It cannot be found in any nation of Christendom." (Journal of Discourses , 10:127).James Talmage said: "A self-suggesting interpretation of history indicates that there has been a great departure from the way of salvation as laid down by the Savior, a universal apostasy from the Church of Christ". (A Study of the Articles of Faith, p.182).President Joseph Fielding Smith said: "Doctrines were corrupted, authority lost, and a false order of religion took the place of the gospel of Jesus Christ, just as it had been the case in former dispensations, and the people were left in spiritual darkness." (Doctrines of Salvation, p.266). "For hundreds of years the world was wrapped in a veil of spiritual darkness, until there was not one fundamental truth belonging to the place of salvation ...Joseph Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him that all the 'Christian' churches were in error, teaching for commandments the doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 3, p.282).More recent statements by apostle Bruce McConkie are also very clear: "Apostasy was universal...And this darkness still prevails except among those who have come to a knowledge of the restored gospel" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol 3, p.265); "Thus the signs of the times include the prevailing apostate darkness in the sects of Christendom and in the religious world in general" (The Millennial Messiah, p.403); "a perverted Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate Christendom" (Mormon Doctrine, p.132); "virtually all the millions of apostate Christendom have abased themselves before the mythical throne of a mythical Christ whom they vainly suppose to be a spirit essence who is incorporeal uncreated, immaterial and three-in-one with the Father and Holy Spirit" (Mormon Doctrine, p.269); "Gnosticism is one of the great pagan philosophies which antedated Christ and the Christian Era and which was later commingled with pure Christianity to form the apostate religion that has prevailed in the world since the early days of that era." (Mormon Doctrine, p.316).President George Q. Cannon said: "After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon" (Gospel Truth, p.324).President Wilford Woodruff stated: "the Gospel of modern Christendom shuts up the Lord, and stops all communication with Him. I want nothing to do with such a Gospel, I would rather prefer the Gospel of the dark ages, so called" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 2, p.196).
While MORMONs merely place a pod outside of your house...
I do not feel threatened by it because I dont think that they will be attempting to convert by the sword.
The gruesome be headings of some 40 Ute corpses in 1850, heads stacked in boxes, and hung by their long hair from the eves of buildings at Fort Utah, has long been ignored, You didnt see the Indians beheading the Mormons.-- Historian Robert Carter
Liberals are; and NOW they will come after YOU for inferring that some of them are not Christian!
We all KNOW the MORMONs, for some reason now; consider themselves to be christians; when all through their history they have claimed otherwise; avoiding the appelation as much as Dracula cringes away from a sprinkling of Holy Water!

For the FROG; anyway!!
Seen?
By whom?
And as for 'official'; around here that REALLY needs to be defined...
Official sites are sites supported by LDS officials unless said official sites are considered unofficial by said officials. At that point such sites are unofficial unless officially referenced for official purposes by officials who can do so officially. This should not be misconstrued as an indication that official sites can be unofficially recognized as official nor should it be implied that unofficial sites cannot contain official information, but are not officially allowed to be offical despite their official contents due the their unofficialness.Official sites will be official and recognized as official by officials of the LDS unless there is an official reason to mark them as unofficial either temporally or permanently, which would make the official content officially unofficial. This is also not to imply that recognized sites, often used on FR by haters and bigots cannot contain official information, it just means that content, despite its official status, is no longer official and should be consider unofficial despite the same information being official on an official site elsewhere.Even then the officialness my be amended due to the use of the unofficial information which may determine the officialness of anything be it official or unofficial depending on how and where it is used officially or unofficially.
