Don't blame the video; defend free speech

Cringe and propitiate: that's the Obama administration's response to the hucksters who have seized on a dopey YouTube trailer to enflame crowds across the Islamic world.

Administration officials have deplored and condemned the video, sometimes remembering to add a mention of the right of free speech (as incumbent Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did) and sometimes omitting it (see for example, Sunday's performance by U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. and potential future Secretary of State Susan Rice on ABC's "This Week").

Blaming the video is convenient for the Obama administration. Blaming the video obviates questions about inadequate security at the Benghazi consulate. Even better, from the administration's point of view, the more we talk about the video, the less we talk about whether the administration made the right choices in its Libyan and Egyptian policies.

The real cause/root of the "problem": Civilizations die when appeasing 7th century barbarians.

They’ve talked and blamed the video ....and now we see calls for blasphemy laws emerging.

Free speech....

“make know law respecting religion.”

The word from the media is that the ambassador to Lybia was killed by “protestors.” I’ve never seen or heard of protestors that had coordinated indirect and direct fire capabilities. It was a well organized combat operation, not a group of idiots angry over some stupid movie nobody has ever seen.

By analogy, suppose some obscure author in 1935 had published a poorly written and hardly noticed pamphlet which described Adolph Hitler as a former Vienna gutter dwelling failed and untalented painter who tolerated and fostered sado-masochist homosexuals in the top levels of his party and government and who very probably murdered his own under age niece after the end of an incestuous affair with her. Nazi storm troopers murder our ambassador and in several German cities burn down American consulates. Others are attacked by mobs of Nazi sympathisers in Austria. Would FDR have grovelled? Over a book that told the truth?

Susan Rice and Hillary Clinton are wrong. I saw the video, and nobody with any intelligence at all could have been offended by that simple effort to create a story that would convert watchers to the author's point of view. It was unsophisticated, awkward, and boring, but, more importantly, it was free speech.

John Kerry claimed freedom of speech when he participated in efforts to undermine our military during the Vietnam War. Bill and Hillary Clinton exercised freedom of speech when when they proclaimed that they detested the U.S. Armed Forces. Barack Obama used freedom of speech when he, at one time in his career, refused to wear a flag pin on his lapel or place his hand over his heart when the flag was saluted.

When I saw the maker of this video hauled off by law enforcement officers, I wondered, “Whatever happened to free speech?”

I don't think Americans should let this pass.

We shall have no blasphemy laws. Even if we have to abolish idiot religions.

It is disturbing. Not because they trumped up other "fraud" charges to rely on, and not even because so many "law and order" types are placated by such nonsense. But because even if the guy had some other kind of fraud or lawlessness, law enforcement CANNOT contribute to even the APPEARANCE that he is being arrested for making the movie.

They ought to back off and say, "well, whatever else he did, we support his right to irritate people with free speech."

It seems to me that some witty individual could make dozens of *animated* videos insulting Mohammed, Islam, Muslim leaders and such, especially now that there are do-it-yourself video animation websites and software.

Then they could be made widely available as torrent files around the world, and there would be nothing the fanatics could do about it, because there would be nothing identifying its makers outside of voice acting.

The best part of the videos would be the closing credits, which thanked the liberal and leftist pests for their voice talents and funding for the videos.

Starring:

Julian Assange, as Mohammed
Bill Maher, as Mohammed’s homosexual lover
Chris Matthews, as Mohammed’s other homosexual lover
Kayne West, as Mohammed’s eunuch “Kaffir”
Rosie O’Donnell, As Mohammed’s child bride

with special thanks to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a secret Jew.
