Maureen Dowd meets anti-Semitism charge

By DYLAN BYERS | 9/16/12 6:42 PM EDT

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd set the Jewish political community on fire today with a column about the Republican ticket's foreign policy proposals that, according to her critics, peddled anti-Semitic imagery.

Dowd fairly observed that neither Mitt Romney nor Paul Ryan are experts in the field of foreign policy, but asserted their strategy was orchestrated by a "neocon puppet master" who was leading the neocon effort to "slither back" into power.

Such language, to say nothing of the questionable legitimacy of her claims, struck experts on American-Israeli relations as an inappropriate (though perhaps unintentional) appeal to anti-Semitic stereotypes, and especially offensive ahead of the first night of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah.

"Dowd's use of anti-Semitic imagery is awful," Steven A. Cook, a senior fellow for Middle Eastern studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote on Twitter.

"Maureen may not know this, but she is peddling an old stereotype, that gentile leaders are dolts unable to resist the machinations and manipulations of clever and snake-like Jews," Jeffrey Goldberg, the Atlantic columnist and leading journalist on Israeli issues, wrote.

"[A]mazing that apparently nobody sat her down and said, this is not OK," Blake Hounshell, the managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine, tweeted.

On the right, The Weekly Standard's Daniel Halper called it "outrageous," while Commentary's Jonathan Tobin described it as "particularly creepy."

"Dowd’s column marks yet another step down into the pit of hate-mongering that has become all too common at the Times," Tobin wrote. "This is a tipping point that should alarm even the most stalwart liberal Jewish supporters of the president."

“She describes Michael Douglas, whom she dated right before he married Catherine Zeta-Jones, as “a really nice guy, a very romantic guy.” The humor of their romance is not lost on her: “Whether he can handle a woman who wields ice picks? I used to tease him about that.”

Michael Douglas dumped MoDo for Catherine Zeta Jones when MoDo started getting too loopy. She never really recovered.

Michael Douglas dumped MoDo when she came back "on-board" and stopped criticizing Clinton during the Lewinsky mess. MoDo's never accepted that he was just playing a role in dating her, as a means of bringing her back into the fold.

He wasn't married to the Yugo, just leasing it, so I trust he's not making monthly payments, is he?

He didn’t trade it in.

Just left it dripping at the curb outside the bar.

“Dowd fairly observed that neither Mitt Romney nor Paul Ryan are experts in the field of foreign policy...”

As opposed to the Chicago crowd, who, to be fair, are quite familiar with the policies of Indonesia and Kenya.

Muareen hasn’t been the same since Michael Douglas dumped her for Catherine Zeta-Jones. She probably blames neo-cons for that too

Next week Maureen will be writing about violent black men who eat watermelon and stalk white women...

Does it really matter what the NY Times writes about or the Obama regime says about Israel or the Jewish community? Sadly they will always be supported by the majority of American Jews.

“What’s the connection between those two broads, I never understood it?”

“Michael Douglas dumped MoDo and married CZJ.”

Yes, and because of that, the “rules” require CZJ pics to posted for any MoDO post on Free Republic.

"(though perhaps unintentional)"

I would love to see ONE example, just ONE, in which a caveat like this is used by the MSM or by the watchdog groups anytime a right-winger is accused of some ambiguous remark which SOME COULD interpret as a slur.

I doubt Dowd is anti-Semitic...just anti-intelligence. I just don’t think she’s smart enough to take seriously. She’s been scribbling frivolous columns using the reasoning ability of first-grader since she was installed at The Slimes.

It would be a very potent political tool, right now, to create a listing of names and faces and quotes of those on the left who have made antisemitic statements.

Despite endless denials, it only takes one such statement on the part of such individuals to identify them as antisemites. And the names and faces of such people should be instantly recognizable to Jews, so that they know beyond doubt, that when those people speak or write in the future, on any issue, it still has an undercurrent of their antisemitism, no matter what they say.

None too subtly, it should be obvious that each and every one of them are Democrats who have not been shunned by their party for their antisemitism.

Isn't that nice...a loving HUSBAND adoring his wife? Someone to give a woman security during her old age?

Instead, the elderly spinster Maureen Dowd only has a long past of what-ifs and if-onlys to haunt her until she dies.
