Libyan, Once a Detainee, Is Now a U.S. Ally of Sorts (bin Qumu, al Qaeda leader of ambassador raid?)
New York Times ^ | April 24, 2011 | ROD NORDLAND and SCOTT SHANE

Posted on 09/15/2012 1:13:29 PM PDT by Seizethecarp

(April 24, 2011) Abu Sufian Ibrahim Ahmed Hamuda bin Qumu was a prisoner at the Guantánamo Bay prison, judged “a probable member of Al Qaeda” by the analysts there. They concluded in a newly disclosed 2005 assessment that his release would represent a “medium to high risk, as he is likely to pose a threat to the U.S., its interests and allies.”

Today, Mr. Qumu, 51, is a notable figure in the Libyan rebels’ fight to oust Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, reportedly a leader of a ragtag band of fighters known as the Darnah Brigade for his birthplace, this shabby port town of 100,000 people in northeast Libya. The former enemy and prisoner of the United States is now an ally of sorts, a remarkable turnabout resulting from shifting American policies rather than any obvious change in Mr. Qumu.

In 1993, the document asserts, Mr. Qumu escaped from a Libyan prison, fled to Egypt and went on to Afghanistan, training at a camp run by Mr. bin Laden. At Guantánamo, Mr. Qumu denied knowledge of terrorist activities. He said he feared being returned to Libya, where he faced criminal charges, and asked to go to some other country where “You (the United States) can watch me,” according to a hearing summary.

Nonetheless, in 2007, he was sent from Guantánamo to Libya and released the next year in an amnesty for militants.

Looks like an Obama Admin “failure of imagination” is assessing what kind of attack a highly trained al Qaeda warrior like bin Qumu might be capable of.

How come and why for do they refer to the previous President as “Bush” (not in this article, but in general), but it’s “Mr. Qumu”, “Mr. Hasadi” and even “Mr. bin Laden”?

This is a very bad guy!

At Quantanamo under Bush they said don’t release him back to Libya unless he is detained. The Qaddhafi let him out after a only a year!

From article at another thread:

The guard’s tale suggests that whoever ordered the assault was able to call on a large number of people to carry out what appeared to be an organized attack.

Wanis al Sharif, the deputy interior minister responsible for Libya’s eastern region, which includes Benghazi, told a group of local reporters that in addition to the four people under arrest, authorities are monitoring others for possible involvement.

“There is a group under our control, and there is another we are monitoring,” Sharif said.

Sharif said that Ansar al Shariah’s leaders had suggested that those carrying the group’s flag during the assault were rogue members acting on their own.

“They called me and told me you have wronged us,” Sharif said.

“They told me that there may be individual acts.”

Extremist group

Ansar al Shariah — Partisans of Islamic law — which is based in Benghazi, is one of the largest Islamic extremist groups operating in Libya, according to an analysis published Wednesday by Aaron Zelin of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

The shadowy organization is led by Muhammad Zahawi and maintains “online connections” to a similarly named group in Tunisia.

A unit, or katiba, based in Derna, an eastern town from which extremists made their way to fight U.S. forces in Iraq, is commanded by a former Guantanamo Bay prison detainee, Abu Sufayan bin Qumu, according to Zelin.

Where Sharif’s findings would fit in the U.S. investigation into the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and the other Americans remain unclear. But the guard’s tale suggests that many more than four people were involved in the attack.

Who was that that wanted Gitmo shut down? Seems like I heard a campaign promise like that back in the last Presidential election. Which party was that that made Gitmo a campaign issue?

“Who was that that wanted Gitmo shut down?”

Correct. And it was Holder's law-firm that volunteered to defend these dangerous warriors and attempt to secure their release and take cases up to the Supreme Court forcing Bush's hand on sending some back to their home countries if they would take them as happened here.

I would call Qumu being alive and in Libya “actionable intelligence” warranting extreme defensive measures to protect US diplomats, especially since Al Qaeda #2 Al-Libi (the Libyan) was whacked by a drone just last month, IIRC. Wouldnt one think that a bit of revenge might be contemplated on 9/11 in Libya?

Wikileaks had this guy nailed after getting access to US files, but the Obama Admin wasn't even making use of its own intelligence, it seems!
