During a House Oversight Committee hearing on Thursday, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) revealed that the U.S. military is currently spending about $20 million on firewood. That’s right, firewood.
“It mentions in your report that the U.S. military is spending $20 million for firewood. Is there any justification for $20 million in Afghan firewood?” Chaffetz asks John F. Sopko, special inspector general for Afghanistan Reconstruction.
“Mr. Chairman that was one of the more interesting comments my auditor told me is that — you are absolutely correct we are paying…approximately $20 million a year for firewood,” Sopko confirmed. “And when my auditors asked for documentation on what we spent on firewood, we were basically told quote unquote ‘we don’t have, the records we just spend the money.’”

Hmm . . sounds like the money IS literally burned like “firewood”.
How come we never see stories about ridiculous spending by the Dept of Education?
Yes, it’s expensive. But it’s milspec firewood.
For the same reason you don't see the wallpaper: when you're surrounded by ridiculous spending you don't see it. In the DoD budget, the ridiculous items stick out like a proverbial sore thumb.
Or maybe you do: the stories about ridiculous Dept. of Ed spending are disguised as stories about the U.S. spending more per pupil on education than any other country and ending up 9th, 10th, 43rd. . . on some measure of educational quality.

Is a 100,000 cords of wood alot?
They didn’t say how much wood they got. I usually get a cord (4x4x8) for $150. That means I can get 133,333 cords for 20 mil and at 128 cubic feet per cord I would get 17 million cubic feet. That would be about 50 acres stacked 8 feet high. Quite a bit of wood, but not astronomical.
Goes for about $125 around here right now. That’s a LOT of firewood. What does algore have to say about all of that CO2?

Until I read the article, I thought it was a tongue-in-cheek reference to building embassies, consulates, police stations and such just to have them burned down by Muslims...

Where did you see 100,000 cords? That’s $200 a cord if true which is not horrible.
That’s just kindling wood for all the Bibles they need to burn to mollify the Islamists.
Why would we need firewood in Afghanistan? I thought that area was hot and dry.

then estimate the cordage, and pull a sample for dry weight/BTU production, based on table for species and locale.

The Afghan army heats with firewood in the winter and cooks with it year round.
I would think in a third world country $50 a cord would be more like it. We get screwed on everything the gov buys.
It’s what they use to cook with - they prefer the taste of food cooked over wood. We built a lot of really nice propane stoves in the new Army mess halls for them, and they would light a wood fire (inside the kitchen!), and cook their rice over it. Too bad we didn’t talk to them before we built all the bright shiny stuff...
Makes more sense, actually - they don’t have the infrastructure to develop and deliver propane to their bases on a regular schedule. Same with the diesel they run the power generators with.
There’s a whole pile of stuff you just can’t make up.
