The US ambassador in Libya and three other embassy staff were killed in a rocket attack after the diplomat's car was targeted in the eastern city of Benghazi, it was confirmed on Wednesday.

A statement from President Obama "condemned the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including ambassador Chris Stevens".

The president added: "Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States."

Earlier, Libya's interior ministry confirmed that Stevens died in the attack. "The American ambassador and three staff members were killed when gunmen fired rockets at them," a Libyan official told Reuters.

An unconfirmed photograph posted on Facebook appears to show a mob dragging a lifeless Stevens along the ground, his shirt off. Some reports say he suffocated to death. Libya's deputy prime minister, Mustafa Abushagur, said security forces had launched a manhunt to find the killers. "I condemn the cowardly act of attacking the US consulate and the killing of Mr Stevens," he said.

Pluswhich, your few exceptions prove the rule.

Let’s look at big places with lots of people and a long history of adherence to the religion:

Pakistan, Indonesia, Egypt. etc.

U.S. France. Germany. etc.

You pick which set you’d prefer to live in.

Being Jewish, I wouldn't dare go with my yarmulke on and Torah in hand. Would you?

I think you'd probably be fine, actually. There are over 20,000 Jews in Istanbul. But yeah, I'm not saying these countries are perfect but they're all worlds better than the Christian countries I listed on just about every metric. I wouldn't want to walk down a street in DR Congo regardless of whether I'm wearing a yarmulke or not.

Actually, not so much:

On November 15, 2003, two trucks carrying bombs slammed into the Bet Israel and Neve Shalom synagogues in Istanbul, Turkey and exploded. The explosions devastated the synagogues and killed twenty-seven people, most of them Turkish Muslims,[1] and injured more than 300 others. Six Jews were among the dead.[1][2][3] An Islamic militant group, IBDA-C, claimed responsibility for the blasts, but Turkish government officials dismissed these claims, pointing out that this minor group did not have enough resources to carry out such an intricately planned and expensive attack.

And before you try the quick and easy reply that I’m not likely to be involved, please be advised that my wife’s Jewish office in Seattle was attacked by a jihadi, with a co-worker killed and several others injured.

Sorry buddy, but no dice. If you want "big places with lots of people" then you should include Mexico which is bigger than Germany and DR Congo which is bigger than France. Would I rather live in Congo or Pakistan? Pakistan if you held a gun to my head, but I really would rather get as far away as possible from either. My point is this -- religion is a lousy predictor of national culture or success.

Some countries are nice places to live and some are crappy places to live and there are a lot of things that influence success, peace and wealth. Religion doesn't seem to be all that important.

Oh wow, there are Islamic terrorists in Turkey? There are also Islamic terrorists in Israel and the United States, the last time I checked.

If you were worried, I'm pretty strongly against Islamic terrorists. Not sure what point you're making -- I'd still rather be in Turkey, Israel or the United States than DR Congo.

Way back toward the end of the civil war in Democratic Republic of Congo the UN weather guys were preparing to get some useful hard data on weather and climate in that area ~ at that time there were only 3 radio sonde capable stations in the entire country, and only 2 more in adjacent countries, which meant that most of Equatorial Africa had only a thin record regarding rainfall, temperature, winds, etc.

The standard stations used in the rest of the world wouldn't work there ~ the termites would eat out the bottoms while the fungus ate the tops and corrosion would eat up all the metal in just months.

It's bad there!

What the UN weather guys worked up looked useable by even illiterate people over a long period of time, although they planned on using folks who could read and write to do the marks on the score sheets.

Then the civil war took a dive ~ supplies were low and the troops were starving. One of the existing radio sonde stations was attacked and the attendants were eaten!

After that the UN people couldn't get any of the locals to touch weather station equipment of any kind.

Eventually James Hansen at NASA just gave up and deleted Africa AND South America from the climatological data bases used for those infamous UN runaway greenhouse models!

Carter is Obama. Obama is Carter.

Both are Traitor Losers who hate America!

Jimmy Carter's presidency was doomed by the Iranian hostage crisis after the US embassy in Tehran was stormed by Islamist extremists following the Iranian revolution.

A year after the 52 Americans were taken hostage, Carter lost the 1980 election. The hostages were released just as President Ronald Reagan, who defeated Carter, was sworn in.

Thanks to RushIsMyTeddyBear and Focaulut's Pendulum and for these graphic art realities!

In an older time, CIA SOG hunter-killer teams would be inbound to gather intel. Once collected they would begin their job descriptions. It is the only way to protect your embassy staff. It reminds me of back in the 80’s when Hezbullah terrorists were kidnapping embassy staff for ransom. They of course kidnapped many Americans. They then kidnapped a russian diplomat and sent the standard ransom demand letter. The KGB went into action and found out who the kidnappers were, and kidnapped the leader’s family. They then sent the kidnapper’s brother’s finger in their reply message and indicated a new part would be shipped daily until the diplomat was returned, which he was, within 24 hours. The Russians did not keep their end of the bargain entirely and killed all the male members of the kidnapper’s family.

Also, sending a Marine FAST team is kind of a poor response, unless the Marine expeditionary brigade is off shore and beginning to disembark or a brigade of Rangers are inbound. Although there would be a pile of dead bodies for each Marine, a FAST team is only 50 Marines. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot are the idiots at the Pentagon thinking endangering Marines in this manner?

“Lucky” I’m not the President....

Yes, I too wish I were president, but I would probably only last about 24 hours before I was impeached and sent to the UN for crimes against humanity for the way I would deal with Islam.

However, the right to offend via free speech doesn’t guarantee that the offended won’t try to murder or succeed in murdering the “offender”.

That's true ~ nor does it stop others from taking revenge.

When it comes to Islam, free speech is not only just a theory, it's one that is very unpopular since it's OK to murder people for exercising it.

That's why we probably need to do what Coulter proposed ~ beat them back to the stone age ~..... er, that was General LeMay..... ~ well, whatever, force conversions and dispose of any who stand in the way ~

Do what you want -- but I think you'd be just fine in Dubai. Plenty of blonde Christian women of all nationalities. Not sure about the Congo or South Sudan, however...

They are probably thinking they are going to be sending out lots and lots and lots of little tiny airplanes and helicopters carrying little teeny tiny missiles that really blow up something fierce and just wiping out everybody stupid enough to show his RPG anywhere in his vicinity.
