Romney cedes Ohio TV airwaves to Obama (at least for now)
LA Times ^ | September 6, 2012 | Michael Finnegan

CLEVELAND — If you switched on a television in northern Ohio this week, chances are you saw an ad for President Obama’s reelection campaign. Or two. Or three. Over and over again.

Mitt Romney? Nothing.

Obama’s Republican challenger has spent much of the summer racing around the country gathering campaign donations to pay for advertising. And the legal restraints that kept him from spending money raised for the general election were lifted a week ago, when the party officially nominated him for president.

Yet for reasons that his advisors declined to discuss, Romney has ceded the advertising airwaves to Obama over the last week in Ohio and other battleground states...

I know this is LA Times, but with the warchest bulging and Ohio being so important why stop?

Similar article this morning about Pennsylvania. I’d say why run ads in the week of your opponent’s convention? It is like a BB versus a cannon of TV time. Wait until next week and then hit them hard with 7 weeks to go.

Why not wait until after the DNC to get fresh ammo for a reload.

Given the attention span of *many* in the electorate and the fact we're still 60 days out,
perhaps they're planning to wait to blitz everywhere much closer to the day ?

Sounds like they are sitting out the convention and then planning to relaunch. After all, during the convention the dems dominate the news, but you get some free time responding in the news.

Romney has been very proactive and produced a number of surprises. I’m sure they are planning a few more over this last couple of months.

Romney is smart with money.

No need to worry.

The theory I've heard:

Romney is going to cede most of the commercial advertising to the Super Pacs. Obama has been burning far more money than Romney on commercials with little to show for it so far and Romney doesn't think that will change. He is planning to pour his war chest into the largest "ground game", "get out the vote" program in history.

Actually, I think it is smart. Obama’s ads will probably turn off most voters. When the other guy is sticking his foot in his mouth, let him. I think Mitt is letting the “Empty Chair” sink in for people. He will hit it hard when the convention is over.

I’d agree...save the money for a little later. The media is going to the airways to the Dems exclusively for the next week. Yuk and double yuk....

Romney just raised $300 million in the last 3 months that he wasn’t able to spend until after the conventions.

Hard to believe he is conceding when the campaign hasn’t even started yet.

Just a guess:

1) No use competing with convention coverage

2) Any day now, the campaigns will disclose their latest cash haul, and camp Romney will know where Barry stands...and spend accordingly.

I don’t agree with either of these strategies, btw.

Do you think Romney should buy TV time like 0bama did?

Or they want to parse through what’s said during the convention, then come out guns blazing turning their own words against them.

I doubt very much he is conceding Ohio. It may be that Ohio is in the bag already in the private polling.

Team Romney needs a few days to sort through the humongous pile of fodder that the Dem convention has provided.

I think it would be a risky strategy to abandon advertisements altogether or even leave it to the (ostensibly) independent super pacs. But Romney is a risk taker and has had a good track record of making the right calls in business and politics. One thing for sure if he poured his entire massive warchest into the ground game, he would have one heck of get out the vote effort.
