First: “Where is the outrage over overt, deliberate racism” in Vice President Joe Biden telling a black audience “if the Republicans win you will be ‘in chains’”?

Second, President Obama “voted three times to protect the right of doctors to kill babies who came out of abortion still alive. That plank says tax-paid abortion at any moment, meaning partial birth abortion -- that’s a 20 percent issue,” a position which Democrats “couldn’t defend...for a day if it was made clear and as vivid as all the effort is made to paint Republicans.”

Gingrich charged: “If the news media spent as much time on the extremism of the Democrats as they spend trying to attack us, they would not be able to adopt that plank this week.” Another guest panelist, New York Times columnist Tom Friedman, declared “I’m a Planned Parenthood Democrat on the issue of choice,” but when Gingrich challenged him to defend the Democratic Party platform support for taxpayer funding of late-term and partial-birth abortion, Friedman called it “a defensible position,” then suddenly decided “I’m here as a journalist, I’ll let the Democratic Party defend it.”

Seconds earlier during the roundtable, NBC News eminence Tom Brokaw maintained Republican opposition to abortion is antithetical to full rights for women. “I think this is the century of women,” he asserted before fretting “there is even among some Republican women out there” the view that the “party doesn’t quite buy into that yet.” He contended “the social issues are very important to women. It’s their bodies, their lives, they feel that it’s not entirely embraced by the Republican Party. That’s my own judgment.”

But one must also remember that Obama’s decisive election victory in 2008 was achieved on a campaign theme of “a fundamentally transformation of America” (exact words)! If 2008 demonstrated anything, it was the validity of a remark by H.L. Mencken that it’s impossibility to conceive of some limit to their stupidity.

I’ll never forget what a close call I had once when I lived in L.A. - I had a toothache and got up at 4 am to take a pill - got a weird feeling - went into my living room - a man had come in the window. It was summer and I was just in underwear. I knew that he was going to jump me in the next second and it would be all over. I bent my knees (thank you, Carlos Casteneda) and let out a scream that woke the neighborhood. The guy left. The police came. I couldn’t have used a gun at that moment - I was too groggy. I’ve met Callista and seen the special relationship she has with Newt. As a lifelong Catholic, Callista was instrumental in her husband’s conversion to that faith in 2009. She is much different from Newt’s first wife, Jackie Battley, his high school Geometry teacher. That marriage began on the wrong step when Newt was 19 (she was 26) and collapsed after 20 years. In 2011 their daughter, Jackie Gingrich Cushman, remembers that it was her mother who requested the divorce, that it happened prior to the hospital stay, and that Gingrich’s visit was for the purpose of bringing the couple’s children to see their mother, not to discuss the divorce.

Marianne Ginther, Newt’s second wife, was a willing participant in a six year affair with Gingrich while he was married to his first wife. I believe the marriage fell apart when Marianne became involved in an arms sting by meeting an arms dealer in Paris. That kind of publicity was not the kind Newt wanted in his political career. Their marriage lasted 18 years.
