I have managed to dig up some more information:

The study was from 2008 through March of 2012.

I have not been able to find the numbers of guns confiscated during this period. For an earlier period, to use the Chicago term “Firearm Recoveries”, are as follow:

2001 10,084

2002 10,182

2003 10,033

2004 10,509

2005 9,856

2006 13,677

Interesting data. Note that the average is considerably over 10,000 firearms per year.

The years covered in the study appear to be 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and three months of 2012. That should be about 50,000 firearms “recovered”. Yet the study only consists of 17,230. Quite a discrepancy. Of course, everything could be explained in the full study, if we were able to read it.

It is not clear how many of the guns “recovered” are confiscated during crimes, confiscated from citizens who are simply guilty of possessing a firearm against Chicago law, or are simply turned in to police by citizens.

From an article in 2008:

“Last year, Chicago police seized about 7,400 guns and received 6,000 at voluntary turn-ins. Over the past decade, Chicago police have confiscated an average of 10,800 guns per year.”
