Ted Cruz was 10 years old when his hero, Ronald Reagan, became president in 1981. By his teen years, the son of a Cuban political refugee had memorized the U.S. Constitution and devoured economics classes at the Free Enterprise Institute in Houston.
........"It would be difficult to overstate the significance of Cruz's primary election win," said Austin Democratic consultant Harold Cook, "not just because he won, but also because of how he did it."
.......For Cruz, the future is now, and he is polishing a speech, which will likely be pushed to Tuesday because of the threatening storm.
.......Cruz's longtime friends say they know the message he'll deliver in Tampa. It's the same one he learned at Houston's Free Enterprise Institute and debated over beers with other young lawyers in George W. Bush's administration.
"Ted has devoted his career, if not his entire life, to defending the Constitution, promoting limited government, and fighting for the rule of law," said Dallas attorney James C. Ho, who has been a friend for 15 years and followed Cruz as Texas solicitor general.
Cruz says he plans to lay out the stark contrast between Obama's vision for America and the agenda of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
"One (vision) is continuing down the path of more and more government spending and control over the economy and our lives," he said. "The second is returning to the constitutional foundations of our nation and the reliance on free markets and individual liberties. That is a choice with tremendous consequences."
Cruz doesn't give Obama credit for much - but he does thank the president for inspiring a new wave of conservatives. "The most long-lasting legacy of Barack Obama is going to be a new generation of leaders in the Republican Party," Cruz predicted.

When Cruz arrives in Washington (as I hope he will): He had better “check six.”
Cornyn refused to endorse either Cruz or Dewhurst in the Primary.
But, I suspect Cornyn was pulling for Dewhurst in his heart of hearts.
I wish Cruz the best, and I hope all goes well for him, but, oddly, just like Rubio, his father was not a refugee - and unlike Rubio, Cruz’s father was a domestic terrorist in Cuba - both Rubio and Cruz have fudged the details on their fathers’ backgrounds and tried to present them as one of the millions of Cubans who fled the brutal communist tyranny of Fidel Castro. But both fathers came here as economic immigrants before Castro came to power.
Lies like this disturb me.

Where did you ever hear Cruz claim his father was a Cuban refugee? In his speeches, he tells his family’s story, and it is not the one you are telling. We have followed the career path of this outstanding young man and have nothing but admiration for what he has accomplished with his intellect and courage.
I call into question your slander of his good name.

I think that Ted Cruz will do us all proud. I think that both his heart and his mind are in the right place.
Interesting how you have researched the background of these two honorable men, and their familial anomalies.. Because I admittedly do not have either of these two gentleman’s background at hand, I will assume what you say is true..
That being said, I’m sure you are also aware that the conditions in Cuba, pre Castro, was not anywhere close to an Island Paradise either.. In fact, Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar , was a brutal Dictator, almost as corrupt as the cabal that the current Obama administration, (shadowy Chicago thugs, with dubious organized crime connections, mafia controlled Unions, Acorn, Soros, the Muslim Brotherhood etc) has pulling the strings of our government..
It was as popular to fight, or flight, the island back then as it became after Castro.. Most of the residents knew Castro, who was well known, wasn’t going to be much better, and as it turned out, much, much worse..
Don’t vote for his father
Even if they left before Castro (D-Havana) took over, they certainly wouldn’t have gone back. Kind of like German Jews emigrating to America in 1932 before Hitler took power.

It was in the very text that was posted in this thread. I saw him on tv during his acceptance speech, and he introduced his father as an escapee from Cuba who had been tortured. I could tell by the way he said it that the story was fishy - so I looked it up and found a newspaper article from about six months ago that had interview material with Cruz about this specific issue, and he was cornered and had to tell the complete story. His father was a domestic terrorist in Cuba.
Oh, here we go again. I guess we can now expect endless sniping being directed at Ted Cruz for years to come. It’s not an uncommon experience for conservatives such as Cruz who are in the trenches fighting the good fight. Cruz will weather it well; he certainly easily handled all the Dewhurst shots and became stronger for doing so.

If they were really honorable they would have presented their backgrounds truthfully and not tried to pass themselves off as the children of exiles from Castro.
I have a specialty with Cuban history, so I follow events linked to Cuba closely. I believed Marco Rubio’s story - he was exposed by Spanish language media in Miami.
The minute I saw Ted Cruz for the first time - on tv during his acceptance speech, when he described his father as having been tortured in Cuba, I could tell he was not being truthful. The newspaper article laid it all out.
Re your remarks about Batista, you are could not be more wrong in comparing him to Obama - in the first place, Cuba of the late 1950s was prosperous, not depressed - it was the golden age of Cuban music. And there was a powerful opposition media that criticized the government constantly - not what one usually finds in a “brutal dictatorship”.
And you are also completely wrong in saying that the Cuban people didn’t think much of Castro - the idiots welcomed him with delirious fervor -
You are being like the silly blacks in this country, who wanted a black man in the white house so badly that they accepted one who had a white mother and who was raised by a white family. I would love to see the son of Cuban refugees representing a US state - there are hundreds of thousands to choose from, beginning with the Diaz-Balart family. So I do find it so very peculiar that out of a million Cuban refugees from Castro, the two that get elected - aren’t, but tried to pretend that they were.
The revolution started in late 1957, my husband and I were honeymooning in Key West in Dec of ‘57. We had planned to take the short hop over to Havana as part of our trip when the news of insurrection showed up. I always regret we didn't go but maybe it was a wise decision.
Get off of this bad mouthing of Cruz or someone is going to call you a dem plant.
