Uh, no. Conventional Wisdom says Ryan is a great pick, and poll numbers bear that out. The liberals in the Beltway are not conventional wisdom.

Uh, yes.

But you totally misread my post.

I said that Conventional Wisdom two weeks ago had it that Ryan was a loser as VP pick.

Remember? Two weeks ago? Ryan wasn't picked yet.

The CW two weeks ago was that Romney would pick a "safe" running mate, definitely not Ryan.

Thanks, Shhrub, I had seen Wilkie’s article but it’s his educated guess involving calculations of probability (which I don’t find convincing). The other at least involves victim surveys.

But as for an actual study as to whether the physical and emotional trauma of rape inhibits ovulation, prevents implantation, or causes very early, unrecognized miscarriage - I don’t think that’s out there. You certainly can’t do a prospective study.

Some retrospective studies show pregnancy rates well over 5%, in places like Ethiopia or Mexico, but I don’t know the methodology - did women report rape before they had any way of knowing they were pregnant? That is, within two weeks of being raped?

An unpleasant possibility is that rapists may target ovulating women more than they do women in the infertile phase of their cycle. There are studies showing that men find ovulating women more attractive, and that ovulating women find “bad boys” more attractive - they may put themselves at greater risk.

heartwood, as I mentioned in my earlier post to you, I remember that there were studies in print, back in the '80s. I'm trying to find those now.

Not so easy however, even in the internet age ... who, after all, wants to risk a firestorm (like what happened to researcher Mark Regnerus) by posting a politically incorrect study on a website?

Why, to do so, you might risk being labelled a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Then next thing you know, somebody with a .45 and a bag of Chick-fil-A sandwiches is standing in your office...

You keep repeating this idiocy, yet there are NO doctors who will support what he said

John C. Willke, M.D., has. Now who's the idiot?

His position that “legitimate rape” does not result in pregnancy is so far wrong that it shouldn’t even deserve an actual response.

Got a link for that?

And btw, I dont wanna get in a huge argument. I met Akin years ago when I lived in MO and he beginning his political career. He is a good man and would have made a good senator. However, this gaffe is beyond stupid. There are so many reasons he should have been prepared or never went on that lefty show. The man was 11 pts ahead!

That being said, there are plenty of other candidates who are just as good if not better. Remember, the primary was split almost 3 ways. Right now I am looking at this strategically point of view to win the seat and not drag down the Presidential ticket.

Well I don't have time to go back and cull all those comments a couple of weeks ago, many by Rubio supporters, that Ryan was too risky. (Don't get me wrong, I like Rubio too - but Ryan is better in 2012.)

More important things to do, like try to defend the unborn.

Akin will not be a loser if he
1. handles this with strength and conviction
2. conservatives get behind him.

I don't know if either (1) or (2) will happen. Just heard Hannity, to his eternal shame, try to pressure Akin to get out.

I agree with you on that and don't want to get into a huge argument either.

My point is that he should try to turn this thing around. It CAN be done. Not easy, but the right thing to do.

Bring Norma McCorvey to this news conference too.

Better yet, Akin should present ...

Rebecca Kiessling: International Pro-Life Speaker, Attorney

Rebecca was conceived in rape but her mother chose life. Now, Rebecca is one of the most outspoken speaker on the topic of "Except in cases of rape".

Official Web Site

I’m right there with you. I am surprised at how many people cowered away from this today. I still don’t think his comment was that far off.

Good post, thanks for that!

What great publicity this could be for the pro-life cause ... if handled right ...
call a news conference, get hundreds of media people and cameras there ... and then put this wonderful woman on the podium.

It would blow their minds. Might even change a few minds, or at least open them.

“Rebecca was conceived in rape but her mother chose life.”

Yeah, but was it a “legitimate” rape? It must not have been if it resulted in pregnancy, according to Akin:

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

re: “This is from Dr. John C. Wilkie, a medical doctor who is an obstetrician/gynecologist:”

Good luck trying to sell that one to the general public buddy. Does this apply if the woman is knocked out or drugged during the attack? How about women held against their will for days or weeks? How about multiple rapes by several assailants? How about an underage girl who is somewhat curious and willing to engage it the act? Can you see where this is going and do you really want to try and sell a candidate with parsing like this?

You asked me to name a "mechanism" that may help prevent conception in cases of rape.

I replied with a credible source, an OB/GYN, who explained how severe trauma and emotional disruption can impede a pregnancy.

But you didn't really want an answer. Like Leftists, you've made up your mind and you're sticking with it, no matter how good the evidence you're given and no matter how credible the source.

And like Leftists, you also feel free to misquote, distort, create straw men, and otherwise divert from an honest argument.

I'm not saying you're a Leftist. But on the topic of abortion, you sure argue like one.

The worst thing about this whole mess is the utter and almost undisguised hypocrisy of the Dems and their media sycophants. Everyone knows nothing a Democrat says, not matter how stupid or how hateful, will ever be held against him/her.

You are so right.

And what's more, the Dems will circle the wagons around any Dem pol who says something stupid or hateful. The MSM ignore it. And voila, the whole thing just fades away.

(And btw, I'm hearing MARK LEVIN make this very point on his radio show as I post this!)

What's even more galling is that in this case, what Akin said was not hateful. Not in the slightest.

Stupid? Yes, I agree that Akin shouldn't have fallen into the MSM's trap, and that "legitimate rape" is a stupid-sounding phrase. (Although a rational defense can be made for it, e.g. that he meant something like "rape as defined by the law.")

But is it worth the hysteria, the gleeful shrieking and phoney gnashing of teeth we're hearing? And the calls for him to QUIT the race? No. How about some PERSPECTIVE on this - as Mark Levin has just called for?

What kind of conservatives are these people who join in the media pile-on? Not courageous conservatives, that's for sure.

RE:”I’m not saying you’re a Leftist. But on the topic of abortion, you sure argue like one.”

WOW, I guess there is a first for everything, although I’m not sure I’ve even mentioned abortion in any of my posts relative to Akin, to tell you the truth.

The current discussion has nothing to do with abortion actually; it’s about what Akin considers “legitimate” rapes and whether a female body has a defense mechanism to prevent pregnancies from rapes. Again, if you want to push hard the arguement that they do, the best of luck to you on winning that one.

Meanwhile, while we are talking about this, oil is pushing $100, Israel is about to attack Iran, GM is heading towards bankruptcy, Christians are being crucified in Egypt, the Social Security Administration is arming itself with 175,000 rounds of ammunition, and another $34 billion was added to the national debt today, all while the ultra-liberal Newsweek called for Obama to be replaced.

Ok, please allow me to correct that:
"I’m not saying you’re a Leftist. But on the topic of abortion a slightly dumb but innocuous and generally correct statement about the physiology of female endocrine hormones, you sure argue like one.”

MARK LEVIN has just announced that according to his call screener, the "vast majority" of callers want Akin to "not resign" from his candidacy.

What's more, Levin said that these callers to his radio show are "furious" with those of you in the media, bloggers, beltway types etc who are calling on Akin to resign.

Levin said this is a good sign -- that the grass roots are rejecting an "injustice" against Akin.

Yes, that is his word, "injustice."

Now I'm just making a sort of a public service announcement for FReepers, who I know generally admire Mark Levin, as do I.

I am not from Missouri, never heard of Akin before today, and carry no water for him -- except now that he's being attacked unjustly I am damn well not going to join in the injustice. And after a day of discouraging weakness on the part of so-called leaders, I am heartened to hear from those of you who get it.
