Of all of the things a chorus could be penalized for, you would never imagine that one could be banned from singing because it is too White.
But, according to WSB-TV, that is exactly the case for Cobb County’s Lassiter And Walton High School choruses.
“This year, the schools were informed by symphony officials that their choruses are not diverse enough, and that the symphony would be inviting a third, more diverse chorus,” said Cobb County Schools spokesman Jay Dillon.
WSB-TV sat down with the ASO president and CEO to explain the decision and work with those who disagreed with it. Here’s more on this story:
“We want the stages of the Atlanta Symphony, whether here, Verizon (Wireless Amphitheatre), or Chastain Park to reflect the diversity of Atlanta,” said ASO President Stanley Romanstein.
Not everyone agrees.
“It’s not necessarily fair to the students at all,” said Vashon Ramsey, an African-American Cobb County resident. “They should be allowed to perform regardless.”
Romanstein said he was surprised by the reaction.
“It’s an interesting misunderstanding,” he said.
Romanstein told Willis that he told the chorus directors about the decision two years ago and said they were understanding at the time.
“There are at least 12 very talented high school choirs in Atlanta,” Romanstein said. “We gave Lassiter and Walton choirs an opportunity to perform for four consecutive years, and they were marvelous. We think it’s time to give other Atlanta high school choirs, who are very skilled and deserving, their chance to perform with the ASO as well.”
Lassiter and Walton were given an opportunity to bring smaller groups from their choruses to perform but both declined the offer.
Rotating among high schools sounds fine. Diversity practiced for its own sake is evil.

So instead of asking how they can elevate predominantly African-American school’s programs to be able to perform in these venues, they simply punish the schools that do achieve simply because of their race.
Imagine a black group being told that they performed well, but they couldn’t be accepted due to the fact that more white groups needed to be chosen. Just imagine the nationwide news media outrage.

No one thought of, nor did they care about the 'racial makeup' of the choirs, they went just for the great music. I don't care what the make-up of any group is, we should be celebrating success and achievement.

First of all, there are some VERY EXCEPTIONAL all black choirs in the U.S.
Second, certain kinds of voices go together. Except fort the occasional “Righteous Brothers” types, diversity doesn’t necessarily work in the sound of a choral setting. Many churches have problem recruiting enough male voices for heior choirs, and the imbalance is striking.
Third, the schools will compensate by loading their choirs with palookas, who will be there as a front, but will mainly be mouthing. That will create stress on the whole operation and be an injustice as well. I’m thinking of something akin to the studio musicians who did all the heavy lifting for Gary Lewis and the Playboys, etc.
Does the Atlanta Symphony accept money from Whites? If this bigoted bunch finds Whites so objectionable, as a White donor, they would have seen my last contribution.
Whites are getting extremely disgusted at being blamed for the failure of every other group after paying trillions of their dwindling tax dollars to help the professional “victims” and never hearing a “thank you.”

I live in the Lassiter High School district. It is as racially diverse as America and the second highest rated (next to Walton) high school in Georgia.

Well I guess it’s about time for Whitey to look at the reality in today’s America and see the ongoing attempt to delegitimize whiteness itself. Whitey needs to follow the approach of the more successful minority communities—Whitey needs to look out for Whitey. Period. Whitey needs, where possible, to associate and do business with Whitey. Whitey needs to look to the advancement of Whitey, and let the others continue to look out for themselves. And Whitey needs to be ready for the pograms that are inevitably coming for him. This country is sick, and I fear the agitators won’t be happy until the last Caucasian is in the ground. It looks like the preparatory dehumanization of Whitey is well underway.
Here’s a novel idea. How about getting the best singers without regard to the color of their skin. I sort of thought that’s what the 64 Act was all about. You know . . . I have a dream that people will be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.

The guy needs to be fired for stupidity. They could have said 'City of Atlanta schools only' and gotten the result that they needed. Let the Cobb schools put on their own concerts.

FTA: Musicians of the ASO have written a reasoned letter to their board, telling them that the ensemble is quickly gurgling down the drain. The musicians are being asked to take a 25 percent pay cut, on top of prior concessions, as the orch faces a $20 million deficit.
They report that many of their number are looking for other jobs, and that Atlanta can no longer attract the calibre of musicians it requires to remain a frontline contender.
At a recent ASO audition, only one-third of the usual number of candidates appeared, none of whom was qualified for even a temporary position. Numerous orchestra members are preparing for auditions elsewhere. Three have been invited to play with the New York Philharmonic this coming season, and may not return.

Musicians audition behind a screen, as I understand, with only legs and feet showing. No one gets to see faces or hands. In some cases even the sex of the musician can be obscured: I read of a case where a woman auditioned wearing trousers and men’s shoes, so behind the curtain she could have been just another one of the guys. It’s all about the sound. Who cares about race or sex?

I guess that with too many whites on the choir they could not make it sound like African fertility rites or hip-hop.
They might actually sing songs the way they were originally written and sung.
