Madonna sued for $10.5 million by Russian anti-gay activists

Singer caused 'psychological stress and emotional damage' by supporting LGBT rights, they claim

Madonna has been hit with a $10.5 million (£6.6 million) lawsuit by Russian anti-gay activists after speaking out in support of gay rights at a gig in St Petersburg last week (August 9).

The 'MDNA' star handed out pink anti-homophobia wristbands to crowd members during the show and told the audience to "fight for the right to be free" in response to a new regulation adopted in St Petersburg in March of this year, which saw the city's yearly gay pride parade banned as it promoted "gay lifestyles" and the "propagation of homosexuality" - both of which have now been outlawed.

Now, Rolling Stone reports that a lawsuit has been submitted by members of the Union of Russian Citizens, the People's Assembly and the New Great Russia party against the singer, with a lawyer for the group claiming that her actions caused "psychological stress and emotional shock" amongst the audience.

A spokeswoman for the Union of Russian Citizens said: "We demand that she pay for moral damage suffered by St Petersburg residents as a result of her actions during the show on August 9. We must defend our right to normal cultural life without propaganda of values and views that contradict the Russian culture."

What was it Elton John called her? “Fairway stripper”?

She was warned “in words” what she could not do, yet she went ahead anyway, so now they’re talking “in money,” something she might understand a little better. More power to them; I hope the orphans get a great take.

Sue her for more!! I wish this country could have sued her treasonous ignorant marxist ex-husband Slime Penn. He should never have been allowed back in the country.

Madonna is TRASH!

Yes, he said she “looks like a fair stripper”. And IMO she always has. She never had any real class.

You called it. And she had the gall, and the disrespect, to preach pro-gay stuff when she knew what the laws of the country and the feeling of the culture were. And there were minors in the audience, and she behaved lewdly.

But then: Did she ever care about minors here?

Would you go to a neighbor’s house and disrespect their customs? And yet she blatantly thumbs her nose at their ordinances, as if she alone possesses the truth. She gives Americans a bad name abroad.

You got that right.

Fame has gone to these peoples heads. Cher, Streisand and a host of orhers believe that singing or acting suddenly means that we need to hear and keep their uneducated opinions to themselves.

Madonna is an embarassment to this country and sadly she’s not the only one. Howdy Doody in the WH is a prime example of “Stupid on Parade”.

... expressed support for the jailed members of Russian punk collective Pussy Riot. In a speech to the 20,000 strong crowd, Madonna said: “I think they have paid the price for this act and I pray for their freedom,” before stripping to her bra to reveal the words ‘Pussy Riot’ written on her back. For ‘Like A Virgin’ she donned a balaclava similar to those worn by the band. She was later dubbed a “moralizing slut” by Russian politician Dmitry Rogozin for her comments...

“I pray for their freedom?” Hmmm. If/when Madonna prays, she certainly adresses her prayers to Satan. Moralizing slut - IDK Dmitry Rogozin, but he’s okay by me! ;o)

Nine residents of St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, filed a 333 million-ruble ($10.4 million) lawsuit against pop-star Madonna for violating cultural traditions during an Aug. 9 concert.

“The Moskovsky district court registered a lawsuit against the U.S. singer, concert organizer PMI Corp. and the Peterburgsky Sports and Concert Complex, where the show was held, said Alexandr Pochuev, an attorney for the plaintiffs.
The plaintiffs are members of the Trade Union of Russian Citizens and Narodny Sobor, Pochuev said in a phone interview.

Some were at Madonna’s concert, while others found out about it from media reports and have a video record of parts of the show, said Pochuev. A hearing date has not been set.”

Will she even appear at the hearing? And if not, what recourse would they have?

Thanks. So they might have a decent chance of winning a judgement. If they do, I guess they could have Madonna’s earnings from sales in Russia confiscated.

Sounds like a bunch of nationalist socialists wanting to stick a sock in someones mouth under threat of prison.

Yeah, but I kind of side with them on this one. She was arrogant and presumed she could act with impunity (which she probably could).

Free speech means the right to express an unpopular or offensive viewpoint. I know its Russia, but I believe that freedom of speech is a universal right, not just an American thing. Yes, including communists, the KKK, Islamists, and NAMBLA, they have a right to say it and I have a right to say what I think of them.

Free speech didn’t use to include pornography, obscenity or details on how to rape children.

Thanks to porn producers, the ACLU and a left leaning SCOTUS, such vile forms of expression are now protected; in opposition to what was considered protected speech for the first almost 200 years of our country.

I agree with you on pornography and obscenity, though I know conservatives that do not. Still just saying pornography should be legal or obscenity should be allowed is covered by free speech.

The third item is simply criminal and worthy of imprisonment. But there’s also the problem of the legal interpretation of “literature” that might describe such depraved activity, or documents that chronicle the unimaginable.

I wrote Amazon regarding the third item expressing my strong opposition to the distribution of the vile text. Apparently enough people spoke up, and the book was pulled if I’m not mistaken.

Another factor involves the Leftwing effort to force companies like Amazon into selling depraved material. Of course, Amazon et al deserves the legal protection to effectively censor such depraved work.

I’m not sure pornography and obscenity are “really” covered by the 1st Amendment, and that’s not to say either is illegal. I would expect a Conservative justice to let the lower courts decide on the matter subject to local law. I believe the 1st Amendment provides protections from the govt and not exactly protection from local decency laws.

I’m all about less law, and would not necessarily seek to regulate so-called “adult” forms of activity save the necessary and practical value of zoning, age restrictions, etc.
