Eliot Ness is running for vice president of the United States.
When Chicago gangs were running roughshod over cities and towns across the nation and all hope was seemingly lost, the FBI brought in the "G Men," led by Eliot Ness. Ness was good, righteous, and uncompromised. Ness could not be bought. And Ness brought the forces of evil to its knees.
He wasn't glam, and his arrest of Al Capone, the kingpin of the outlaws, wasn't sexy (tax evasion), but it worked.
Why do I bring this up? Because I can't help but see the ghost of Eliot Ness when I look at Paul Ryan. The paradigm is the same. Of course, this time evil is cloaked in a rogue presidency, and they are making the laws, but the battle is the same: right and wrong, good and evil, etc. And Ryan, like Ness, is righteous and uncompromised.

When we need heroes so badly, one comes running. Ness arrested Al Capone? I am willing to bet the mortgage that this is not even close to being true.
Wait, what was I rooting for?
Ness is credited with bringing Capone down.
You're on for mine, about a quarter mil.

Factually this article is far from the mark. The “G men” that Ness belonged to weren’t from the FBI, they were from the Prohibition section at the Treasury Department.
How? By whom? Where? I don’t think so.
Mainly through the Volstead act and Tax evasion.
He got Capone on Technicalities.
The paradigm is not the same. The primary problem is cloaked within the Federal Reserve's policies....i.e. Quantitative easing.
I hope Ryan doesn’t shut down breweries!
Check your history. “HE” did not do squat. The accountants who brought AC down did not work for Ness and probably did not even know his name. Now, if you get your history from TV shows and a crappy movie, you probably think differently, but it’s still wrong. Check post 7; he seems to know a thing or two.
Yes, they were called T-Men, not G-Men. and had no relation with the FBI.
I read Ness’ book and he didn’t think all Chicago cops were crooked, just all their chiefs.
The main tool they used to get Capone was wire taps.
Oh, the V. Act is all about prohibition, which does not relate to the charges against AC. “Volstead Act” sounds all official and important, but it has nothing to do with AC’s conviction.
He squashed Capones income via the Volstead act.
Not something I would vote for.
What?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ness “squashed” Capones income viat the VA???????????????
The Volstead Act made Capone one of the richest men to ever trod the globe.
It is what allowed Ness to make Capone desperate for money and then he ultimately got him on Tax evasion when Capone tried to protect his assets.
Hardly a hero by my standards.
I still love Eliot Ness Beer!
Ness also shut down his Breweries via the Volstead act, cutting off his money.
The VA did not make VA desperate for money. It made him wealthy beyond the dreams of Louis XIV. Period. “HE ultimately got him...” Purely and 100% wrong. “HE” did not get him. Not once, not ever. Agents who had nothing to do with Ness got him.
Ness and his men confiscated literally hundreds of Capone’s trucks and other vehicles. They once had a parade of these vehicles around the hotel Capone used as his headquarters.
Capone and his men came down and watched the parade.
A lot of the Mob back there was all about prohibition.
The Brazzanos in Pittsburgh made the moola selling sugar to home brewers.
I recall oldtimers tell me you could buy a thing called “Welches Bar”
It was a yeast/sugar cake that you could toss in with the grape juice.
No directions or product description.
I was a way to circumvent the prohibition laws.
You watch too much tv. Ness never touched AC’s cash in any real way. I believe in ‘26, AC’s inflation adjust personal income was $100 million. AC did not declare his true income, not once, not ever, and this failure to declare had NOTHING to do with Ness. NOTHING.
Well explain the history of mystery to us Perfesser.
And this has what to do with income tax evasion?
What? Explain how “Ness arrested Capone” or developed the tax case against him. THAT is what this thread is about.
It was a yeast/sugar cake that you could toss in with the grape juice.

I was a way to circumvent the prohibition laws.
Now you've got me curious.

The bottom line is that comparing Eliot Ness to Paul Ryan is not a popular idea.
The bottom line is that comparing Eliot Ness to Paul Ryan is not a popular idea.
But Comparing Obama to Capone works for me.
Okay. I can dig that.
It really was the Untouchables who brought down Capone.
They gathered the information via wire taps showing how much business he was doing, how much income he was bringing in etc.
They also discovered where his records were and served Summons on Capone for them. Capone did not provide them so they got a court order and seized them. Capone had no idea they knew where those records were.
hats off to ya
I never saw it.
The Oldtimers told me about it.
The said it just looked like a wrapped bar of soap that said “Welches Bar”
I know all those old geezers knew how to make wine.
Well, Capone had balls, could f&*@ you up pretty good, was handy with weapons, and, as far as I know, did not hate America with a burning passion that probably outshines bin Laden’s hate for America. I would sooner compare the kenyan piece of filth with the homosexual drug addict that Nick Nolte strangled to death in the move Q&A.
The Untouchables were Ness’ men. They had nothing to do with the things you describe. Look it up. It will take 10 seconds, thanks to Al Gore’s amazing internet.
It is a pretty pointless article.
I am not fond of revenooers or prohibitionist.
Although Al didn't understand it at the time, the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and the subsequent ocean of publicity, some of which glamorized Capone and some of which demanded justice, catalyzed the government forces against him. After just a few days in office, Herbert Hoover pressured Andrew Mellon, the Secretary of the Treasury, to spearhead the government's battle against Capone. Here's a link to the entire article:
Mellon commissioned a two-pronged approach: to get the necessary evidence to prove income tax evasion and to amass enough evidence to prosecute Capone successfully for Prohibition violations. Once the evidence was collected, the Treasury agents were to work with the U.S. Attorney, George E. Q. Johnson to initiate prosecution of Capone and the key members of his organization.
The man charged with gathering the evidence of Prohibition violations --bootlegging --was Eliot Ness, who began to assemble a team of daring young agents like himself. The biggest effort was led by Elmer Irey of the IRS Special Intelligence Unit, who redoubled his ongoing efforts shortly after Hoover's mandate.
While there was doubt that Capone could be successfully prosecuted for Prohibition violations in Chicago, regardless of the weight of evidence, Mellon felt sure that with the Sullivan ruling the government could get Capone on tax evasion.
“The man charged with gathering the evidence of Prohibition violations —bootlegging —was Eliot Ness,”
Unfortunately, AC was never charged with bootlegging of any kind. Ness didn’t bring him down, and he certainly never “arrested” him.
One thing we should be aware of is that the mob is largely legit today as capitalist.
Obama is Mob too, but he use socialist tactics to shut down competition.
It’s no coincidence that The NY Mob had like 140 players busted and rounded up in the first year of Obamas administration.
Chicago was moving in.
Its no coincidence that Obama ripped the tax payer off for 85 billion to bail out the auto industry, and it all went to the unions while Delphi white collar workers and Bond holders got ripped off.
I don’t have to look it up. I have already read Ness’ book which was titled “The Untouchables”.
It surprised me how easy it was to get Capone. It totally depended on them being totally honest. Once Ness had his group which he could trust he simply did the basic police work and got him.
Like I said before, Ness used wiretaps which were not that common at the time. Ness basically knew everything they were doing.
Of course it took auditors, prosecutors, experts on tax law etc. but Ness deserves the credit he got.
Ness did not arrest him. Period. End of story. Ness did not build the case against him. Period. End of story. You are wrong about everything. Period. End of story. You “don’t have to look it up,” but you should.

“...Ness deserves the credit...”
I agree with you. Many try to downgrade Ness, Melvin Purvis, and J. Edgar Hoover but all of the above were very capable.
Purvis lead that botched raid at Little Bohemia but once again he was afraid to get local geographic info from local law enforcement because he thought they might tip off the mob. He knew his immediate group were clean (untouchable).
It wasn't sexy? Good, because the last thing people would have wanted to see was something sexy going on between Capone and Ness.
like so many you miss the truth.....Eliot Ness’ job was to damage Al Capone’s ability to pay graft and buy politicians.....the accountants then had the ability to bring him down
Eliot Ness’ jobs was to show Chicago and the country that Capone was vulnerable and he used the media of his day to do it......
Like so many, you miss the point. I never wrote a single syllable about what you wrote. Not a single syllable. I merely stated, and will state again...
NESS DID NOT ARREST CAPONE, NOR DID HE BUILD THE TAX CASE AGAINST CAPONE.
Also, it is pure nonsense to say that Ness’ work allowed the accountants to do theirs. Do you have a source for that bizarre claim?
This is too funny. I take it from the wording of your post that you went to wikipedia for your info. And then you left off the money shot sentence...
“Ness had very little to do with the IRS prosecuting Capone for income tax evasion, which led to Capone’s downfall.”

There was another version of the movie “The Untoucheables” that came out just a couple of years ago, staring Kevin Costner.
You must be gettin’ a bit older like me. When that happens, things that happened TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, seem like “just a couple of years ago.” Yep, that movie came out in 1987.
