Boehner Calls Opponents To TARP "Knuckledraggers"
RealClearPolitics ^ | Tuesday August 14, 2012

Posted on 08/14/2012 5:29:21 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

VAN SUSTEREN, FOX News: People think of him as hawkish on the budget, on expenses, but he voted for TARP. He voted for the auto bailout, voted for two stimulus in '08, voted against the '09 -- February '09 President Obama stimulus. How does -- I mean, how does he explain those, or I mean, how does -- politically, how does he sell that?

BOEHNER: I mean, I think that he's a practical conservative. He's got a very conservative voting record, but he's not a knuckle-dragger, all right? He understood that TARP, while none of us wanted to do it, if we were going to save -- save our economy, save the world economy, it had to happen. I wish we didn't have to do it, either, but he understood that.

Headline is misleading.

Boehner made two separate statements, one general, and one specific to TARP.

It's a misreading to conflate the two just for the pleasure of flogging Boehner around the fleet.

Boehner is an idiot. Please cite the clause in the US Constitution that empowers the federal government to bail out failing loser companies.

Please tell me how Romney, who is even more liberal than boner, is going to bring fiscal sanity? Because he picked Ryan? You know very well that Ryan will be forced to attend funeral services and fundraisers, rather than going toe-to-toe against the abortionist in real policy matters. Deep down I do hope Ryan-Romney will be Cheney-Bush.

Boner, we actually understood that prior bank failures were best dealt with through selling off assets, rather than propping up the bad banks and businesses.

Boner, you disgusting pile of cr**, why don’t you go cry in the corner until we can primary your a$*?

Democrats don’t even need to call conservative Republicans names. Boehner golfs with Obama and attacks Conservative Republicans for him. This is kind of early in the game to alienate the conservative base. At least McCain waitied until a few weeks before the 2008 election to blow it. The Republican Party is finished.

You’re so bright, who IS he calling knuckle draggers then?

In a word: Michele Bachmann. Maybe not Michele specifically, but her caricature: reps who look for any excuse to oppose consensus legislation to play up how conservative they are (at least in his view) -- and birthers and Paulites and, well, probably a good chunk of FR (probably including me, depending on the issue). It was a candid and unwise description and not exactly a surprise considering Boehner is an establishemt conservative who has spent many years in the DC bubble.

What is was not was a statement that TARP opponents are knuckledraggers. He indicated in the article that even those who voted for it were opposed on principle but considered it a necessary evil.

Boehner was dropped on his head as a baby as often as was Biden.

Boehner has the aptitude to ladle out food in the House cafeteria, but anything more demanding than that is completely beyond his limitations.

To-do list:

1. Defeat JugEars
2. Replace Boehner with a Tea Party conservative
3. Replace McConnell with a Tea Party conservative.

My congressman was one of the knuckledraggers the GOP threw overboard for voting against TARP and I was stuck with one of Nancy Pelosi’s poolboys for two years.

In 2010 we sent our knuckledragger back to congress against the wishes of the GOPe.

There is NOTHING conservative about taxing the unborn, duffus. This nation hired a 'compassionate' conservative whose real claim to fame was his name and willingness to work with liberals. That worked out so well that the liberals handed him his head and replaced him with the bottom of the barrel leftist.

These politicians sure have a 'god' complex when they use taxpayers dollars to claim credit for saving.

Lastly, as I read his words it initially sounded like the wailing Speaker was rooting for Obama.

Boehner has no intention of holding Romney's feet to the fire (should he walk out of the Convention as the nominee, and if he wins the election).

He's much beholden to Romney for making this effort to get Ryan out the way!

When Romney's current and former staffers and close friends get done with Ryan, he'll be a gelded Vice President as well.

It's the same old same old with the GOP-e. They must be purged NOW ~ not later!

My understanding is they still believe it was necessary. I don't expect many minds have changed or will in the next decade since there's no 'proof' not passing TARP wouldn't lead to fiscalgeddon.

The problem is the gop e IS the gop. The only folks who are making a somewhat successful attempt to change it are the Ron Paul supporters. While I personally sympathize with them, they are not supported by most traditional conservatives.

Currently the fielded voting strength of the GOP-e is about 15% of all Republican votes. We have several different Conservative factions within the GOP coalition who have more voters than that. Together, hard core Conservative voters are at least 40% of the total party vote. There's another group of traditional Republicans who will usually turn out for whoever is nominated but they don't have any core values that influence party ideology.

I think it has come time to simply expel the GOP-e lock, stock and barrel. They contribute little to party success these days, so why should we allow them to run their toadies in our primaries!

Unfortunately that 40% or 60% isn’t organized enough to do anything effective. While conservatives argue amongst themselves, the libertarians are taking over the party apparatus going state to state. On balance a good thing in my view, but they aren’t traditional conservatives in their views. And they’ll deal with the gop e in a heartbeat if it helps them to achieve their aims.
