If one of Mitt Romney's goals in choosing a running mate was to mine the same mother lode of conservative excitement that John McCain tapped by picking Sarah Palin four years ago, there's one additional dilemma for Romney to address: Palin is still around.
A day after Romney unveiled House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential pick, Palin suggested in a statement posted by her Fox News colleague Greta Van Susteren that she would not speak at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa.
(snip)
For this reason, it was notable when she initially offered only a lukewarm reaction to Romneys selection of Ryan.
On Saturday night, the former Alaska governor posted on her Facebook page a statement that clocked in at over 1,100 words, in which she attacked President Obamas policies and compared the nations fiscal mess to Californias, but offered only cursory congratulations to Romney for choosing Ryan and declining to praise specifically any of the Wisconsin congressmans attributes as a running mate.
The following morning, two Republican sources with knowledge of discussions between the Palin and Romney camps told RCP that Palin would not attend the convention after not receiving an invitation to speak in prime time.
Theyve got Ryan now, so they think theyve got the Tea Party covered, one of the sources said.

Indeed.
No, Sarah has spoken out about this already.
Can’t we take people at their word??
The GOP-E mantra: “They don’t have anywhere else to go.”

It should be VERY CLEAR by now that Romney is not going to give the Dems any easy targets - he’s forcing the Dems to pull things out of thin air to use against him.
And, at least to me, this makes perfect sense. Romney’s a show-in if he campaigns hard - Obama has NOTHING to run on, and needs to scare the people into voting against Romney - and Romney will not do Obama any favors in that area.
We need to keep our eye on the ball to win.
Above words are from Real Clear Politics, and I'd say that the writer is wrong. Sarah's plans for being there are old news ... and she will be there.
The frustration people feel is enormous. Yes, we are between a rock and a hard spot, so we better strengthen the House and Senate.
Exactly and Palin knows this. She’s a lightning rod. She’s really all the more terrific for bowing out and still working to win.
Scott Conroy is the journalist who’s closest to the Palins-—he’s signaling what’s going on behind the scenes. And he’s generally right.
From the article:
Palin would not attend the convention after not receiving an invitation to speak in prime time.
“Theyve got Ryan now, so they think theyve got the Tea Party covered, one of the sources said”
One big problem with this Ryan isn’t Gov. Palin.
Oh by the way as I’ve said before I have no interest watching this clown show called a convention.
If the national GOP leadership fails to extend to Sarah Palin a warm invitation to speak at the convention, it will be incredibly foolish.
So foolish, in fact, that it will give the lamestream media an enormous golden opportunity to portray just such a rift and run with the story.
Is this how the GOPe thinks it can attract TEA partiers who may be somewhat reticent about voting for a bocialist like Romney?
OMG, surely the GOP isn't this dense...

While I respect her , she’ll never be VP or POTUS . Just the way it is .
Well we should have her back now. Instead of accepting the decision of the GOP not to invite her, we can send a strong message to the RNC via e-mails. NO SARAH AT THE CONVENTION, NO VOTE FOR ROMNEY. If enough of us send that message it might change their mind.
Ryan isn’t exactly Tea Party since he voted for the bailouts.
I think I’ll pass on watching the Convention. A RINOfest isn’t what I want to watch.
Send a message to the RNC. No Sarah at the convention, no vote for Romney/Ryan. (you don’t have to really mean it, but if enough of us do this it could change things).
@PeterHambyCNN McCain hauled in $10 million over three days after the Palin announcement in Dayton.
@PeterHambyCNN @ZekeJMiller Sarah Palin regularly pulled crowds five times that size — by herself
@PeterHambyCNN Paul Ryan “absolutely” better VP pick than Palin, say top Iowa Republicans > http://bit.ly/MXSH2F
But NOW we know that Sarah didn’t decline to speak, She was NEVER offered to speak. I’ll still say that there is more going on between the two sides behind the scene than they are letting on......hmmmm!
This is the kind of thing that happens when your guy loses and the the other guy wins.
Romney was definitely the other guy.
YOU GO GIRL dont let the men push you around. And it could be a brilliant move and President Rommy can appoint Sara Palin “Secretary of Energy”
You should know better than to post it. We'll learn in due time what's between the two camps, but this article gives us nothing but speculation and rumor.
Her full throated 100% support for the ticket was given yesterday, so let's wait to see what actually happens here.
I mean, who could possibly imagine the press trying to sow discord in the conservative base? That never happens right? /s
I like the way Santorum and Gingrich handled themselves.
After the primaries didn’t go their way they enthusiastically endorsed the front runner and offered to do anything to help. They were not coy about their support.
To me both men displayed class.
Same old tired worn out message every time the country club RP runs one of their has been or RINO proven candidates. And guess what? It usually works! Not for me though. I quit listening and playing along in '96. The quality keeps dropping each time though it is near the bottom of the barrel time this time around, IMHO.
At some point FReepers have to get smart and stop trusting the Media.
Here’s the full statement by Palin:
Everything I said at the 2008 convention about then-candidate Obama still stands today, and in fact the predictions made about the very unqualified and inexperienced Community Organizers plans to fundamentally transform our country are unfortunately coming true. This year is a good opportunity for other voices to speak at the convention and Im excited to hear them. As Ive repeatedly said, I support Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in their efforts to replace President Obama at the ballot box, and I intend to focus on grassroots efforts to rally Independents and the GOP base to elect Senate and House members so a wise Congress is ready to work with our new President to get our country back on the right path. This is imperative. As President Clinton said in 2008 while candidate Obama and lapdogs in the media were thrashing his wifes record and reputation, this is the biggest fairy tale. For the sake of Americas solvency and sovereignty we must close this nonsensical book in November -
They’re working hard to split us and keep conservatives home. That’s the recipe for reelecting Obama.
Very recently I heard her say she has rented a large place down the street from the convention hall. I’m thinking that’s where people will go to have contact with her. That did sound like she won’t be in the convention hall. She wouldn’t step on Romney’s parade and it’s clear he doesn’t want her around.
Since she is a Fox contributor, she will likely be in the Fox News “box” there often during the convention time.
Nobody has Gov Palin’s intellect.
Not around some in these parts. Everything is a conspiracy to keep Palin gagged and out of the White House.
She deserves better than many who claim to be "supporters." They come off more like cult members who are more convinced they know Palin than Palin knows Palin.
I'm impressed she acknowledged what I suspected. This election is just too important to offer ammo to the Democrats. Sometimes leadership means taking a secondary role. She's doing important work on the congressional elections and should be praised for it, not called a "judas goat" like Alan Keyes has. It's evident Palin cares more about the country than her own ego, unlike Keyes.
You get it. Sarah Palin gets it. Too many here do not.
No Sarah, no watching the convention
Sharkie you've been involved in the PDS wars long enough to know that Scott Conroy, the author of this piece, is very close to the Palins and usually gets his information straight from them. He was on her "One Nation" tour last summer and (along with Shushannah Walshe) has acted as her own outlet to the media before, and so I wouldn't be surprised if if the two unnamed "Republican sources" were Sarah and Todd themselves. Yes, he has that kind of access to them.
What's he's saying is that Romney apparently offered her a token daytime speaking slot (when nobody's watching) and she told him to go pound sand.

Conroy is one of the few I “trust” when reporting on Gov. Palin. His work has been on the straight and narrow for the most part.
Nice to know that my original posting (via Gretawire) was vindicated....before the mods took it down.
I’ve met Conroy at several Political events over the years. It is true, he does have a knack for getting the vibe on what’s going on in the Palin sphere.
“You get it. Sarah Palin gets it. Too many here do not.”
Thanks guys, I thought that I’d get hammered with my post.
The challenge FReepers and all conservatives face is winning a national election over time gets dicey. We have to think incrementally and with a growing economy social issues can move forward undercover of economic success.
The fact she is not attending is de facto proof she has no credential. She has apparently disassociated her self from the Alaska Republican party and is not a real part of any other state organization.
There is a difference between not speaking and not attending. She can not attend, not because she wasn’t invited but apparently because she is ineligible having no credential
That is apparently because that is her choice
Certainly not Paul Ryan...
