CHICAGO — U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., a Chicago Democrat who took a hushed medical leave two months ago, is being treated for bipolar disorder, the Mayo Clinic announced Monday.

The Rochester, Minn.-based clinic specified his condition as Bipolar II, which is defined as periodic episodes of depression and hypomania. Hypomania is a less serious form of mania.

"Congressman Jackson is responding well to the treatment and regaining his strength," the clinic said in a statement...

It's good he's getting treatment. I know someone with bp2, it's a difficult disease.

Will he keep his seat or will the Democrats ease him out?

Early reports that he tried to kill himself are probably true. BP2 is more depression then Mania, and there are more suicides/attempts in the Bipolar 2 group. A lot of people think it’s a lesser form of Bipolar, but it’s really a different form— much more depression with less mania.

It wasn’t all that long ago when such conditions were “treated” by lobotomy, which was the favored Kennedy approach.

Jesse, Sr.’s first question was, “So does this mean he’ll start voting Republican?”

I have bpII and have been to Hell and back because of it. I hope he’s getting the treatment he needs. It’s also probably better that he resign his position, better for those he represents that he step out of the way and better for him too.

Obviously the Jackson's approved this message, otherwise the Mayo Clinic is in a world of hurt.

Hypomania is a less serious form of mania.

Sort of like this:

No one from the Media had the guts to ask "Doctor, how does this illness affect one's decision-making ability? Are you concerned that someone with this disorder is in a leadership position?"

If Jackson was a white conservative they'd already be clamoring for his resignation - for the good of the nation, of course.

He’ll be replaced with some one more up to the task of overseeing the rackets. So obvious that Junior thinks Obama supplanted him as Black Prince of Chicago and stole his rightful career. It drove him over the edge. Hope they are keeping him away from sharp objects.

"Congressman Jackson is responding well to the treatment and regaining his strength," the clinic said in a statement...

"We expect him to soon be able to get back with his white girlfriend and arrange for some more special deals with other soon-to-be-incarcerated governors. He told us he was anxious to get back out there and trying to live up to his dad's great examples."

In that case I would have no problems with Mr.Jackson self medicating.

I don’t wish bipolar/depression or any mental illness like that on anyone, but c’mon, this guy was and would’ve been a jackass regardless.

Damn, I called this a while ago after reading the reports on his “problem” and noting that, in my experience, that they were medspeak codewords for Bipolar Schizophrenia.

I also note that there is no mention - at this time - of schizophrenia so it may well also be a factor, otherwise they certainly would have publicly ruled it out, as it is a serious complication of Bipolar disorder.

Ease him out?? Are you really thinking that through?

This should certainly be enough to elect him for life in the Democrat political world, ala Ted Kennedy...

Is he perhaps establishing a medical condition as defense of possible corruption charges that are being investigated?

There have been a few threads on this, but let me jump on this one to say I wish him and his family well in such a difficult situation.

I lost a sister-in-law to bipolar disorder and it was very dreadful.

I’m glad Mr. Jackson is getting help, I hope he gets good help, better than what my s-i-l got. Sure, it was partly on her, but remember she was mentally ill.

This is one of the biggest failures of liberalism, how they have left the mentally ill to “fend for themselves” as Obama might say. But hey, in the case of the mentally ill, he supports that.

Oh well, that’s because he suffers from the biggest mental disorder of all - Liberalism.

I know Cong. Jackson is a big Lib too, but I still hope he gets well.
