No superhero crap.

He probably worked on a good number of superheroes over the years in addition to his other work. Not quite sure how Superman's code against killing worked out for him when he was in the army in this issue, LOL. Cover by Joe Kubert.

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell’st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more, death, thou shalt die.

John Donne

RIP Joe, a great artist and from what I understand, a great teacher. Loved his work on Sgt. Rock and as I recall he did Enemy Ace and sometimes the Haunted Tank among others. Loved his Viking Prince as well. He’ll be missed.

Absolutely. Just think of all the immense talents to graduate from his Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Arts: Stephen Bissette... Karl Kessel... Tom Mandrake... Rags Morales... Timothy Truman... Rick Veitch...

He left his mark on the medium, in a way few (if anyone) not sporting the surname "Kirby" ever has, or will.

Damn. Almost went to his school, but mother wouldn’t let me move that far away.

Rest in Peace, Joe.

A passing of one of the great legends in American comic books--not only for his legendary World War II-themed comics, but the school he ran that produced a long line of great comic book artists since then. He will be sorely missed.

More classic Kubert... this time, from his definitive Tarzan run:

Sorry to hear this, one of my favorites from the 60's-70's. In the 70's, he did some interesting work on a different sort of superhero called Ragman - short lived due to the changes at DC, but a good read, IMO. RIP, Mr. Kubert.

I met Mr. Kubert at a comic book convention some years ago. My 4-year old daughter was in costume and got away from me in the crowd by ducking into one of the booths. It took a second or two to fight my way over to her. In that time, this smiling grandfatherly gentleman started talking to her, asking if she was an elf, etc. He asked me and I let her sit on his lap as he talked to her for a few minutes about kid things. You could just tell that this was a man that naturally loved children and my daughter just loved him back.

When they were done, I told my daughter, “Say ‘thank you’ to Mr...?”

“Joe”

“Thank you Joe, bye”
