Democratic platform draft language on marriage equality, ENDA revealed
LGBTQ Nation / The Washington Blade ^ | August 9, 2012 | Chris Johnson

The draft language in the Democratic Party platform endorsing marriage equality has been revealed and shown to say “we support marriage equality” is set to become a tenet of the party’s beliefs.

In addition to endorsing marriage equality, the language also calls for repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and urges passage of DOMA repeal legislation known as the Respect for Marriage Act. Notably, the language explicitly backs religious freedom for marriage, saying religions should “decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.”

Buzzfeed was first to make the language public ahead of the scheduled meeting of the full platform committee in Detroit. The Washington Blade confirmed the language is accurate through two sources familiar with the drafting process.

The full language reads:

“We support the right of all families to have equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law. We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.”

“We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. We support the full repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.”

This weekend in Detroit, the full platform committee will discuss the draft platform and have the opportunity to submit proposed amendments, which need to be approved by a majority of the committee voting and present. The platform will then be presented to convention delegates Charlotte, N.C., for the Democratic National Convention.

Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, urged the committee to adopt the plank pertaining to marriage equality as part of the Democratic platform.

“Marriage equality has quickly become a mainstream American value and it’s a sign of the times that the Democratic Party has included language affirming the ability of gays and lesbians to marry in its draft platform,” Griffin said. “We encourage the Platform Committee and the delegates to the convention to adopt this strong statement that all loving and committed American families deserve equal treatment.”

Additional LGBT platform draft language has been revealed stating the Democratic Party’s commitment to passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The language also touts previous accomplishments, such as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal and passage of the hate crimes protections law.

As with the marriage language, the additional LGBT language was first reported by Buzzfeed. The Washington Blade confirmed with a source familiar with the platform drafting process that the language is accurate.

“We know that putting America back to work is job one, and we are committed to ensuring Americans do not face employment discrimination. We support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act because people should not be fired based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.”

“President Obama and the Democratic Party are committed to ensuring all Americans are treated fairly. This administration hosted the first-ever White House Conference on Bullying Prevention and we must continue our work to prevent vicious bullying of young people and support LGBT youth. The President’s record, from ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ in full cooperation with our military leadership, to passing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, to ensuring same-sex couples can visit each other in the hospital, reflects Democrats’ belief that all Americans deserve the same chance to pursue happiness, earn a living, be safe in their communities, serve their country, and take care of the ones they love.”

Meanwhile the Log Cabin Republicans are helping draft the GOP

Maybe the party of perverts will draft Jerry Sandusky for
president. Oh, I forgot, he just got 100 years for doing the same thing to little boys the democrats want to make legal.

Just Lost North Carolina

Every state that had the freedom to vote on the issue voted it down easily (35?). We know when it comes to this issue, all those states are on our side. Let's hope they're as serious as we are about this crap.

People have been forced to remain silent (or pretend to be "tolerant") when it comes to their real feelings about this through left wing intimidation, but once they're in the voting booth, they're free to express their real beliefs without fear of radical retaliation .

The Chic Fil A thing opened a lot of eyes. Those who secretly don't agree with homosexual sodomy realized they're not alone. Millions and millions of other normal of people agree with them. That's why I think the left is being so bold. They know they only have a little time left. People are starting to realize political correctness is nothing more than political oppression.

I know for a fact it has and its caused many of their Pastors to come out against Obama. The number of people who follow these pastors in Texas and Louisiana is quite large. There are sizeable Black Church communities in both Houston and Dallas/Ft. Worth areas and their pastors have publicly expressed outrage over this very issue and they have a large following. I don’t know about the rest of the “South” but the Texas Black community is really rather complex and their “Churched” communities, both rural and urban, intentionally maintain a very low profile and are rather tight nit. Having spoken with many of them it seems they maintain this position because they tend to be the more successful members of the overall Black population. The company I work for recruits heavily from the “Churched” community.

Translation: We don't care how you do it, but you WILL have homo marriages in your church. Stuff your Bible. How do you like us now, bitter clingers?

This is like the whole BS language of “marriage equality”, “domestic violence”, “child support”, etc... all are programs to put punitive taxes on every one, worse than, say, the way Iran is embargoed or China is done in for dumping on us.

This country is heading for the craphole and the only real thing we might have is the Tparty.

Sad thing is I don’t expect ROmney to have the guts to rescind any executive orders, just like Bush never vetoed any leftist legislation. THey are going to appease the terrorists.

DO THEY SUPPORT POLYGAMY? That is equlity too or is it that they support their kind of marriage.

Shame we have a nich of cowards on our side, whether that be the elitist GOP, talk radio or pundits like Hannity.

It’s time they dealt with this issue instead of being silent all the frigging time.

Anyone one of us o ere, on ur side who refuses to speak up in public to friends, family etc ae just as guilty in helping the homostapo.

equality means all sorts of marriage so the question is for them is”do you support marriage equality for polygamy, for cousins, for underage, for any kind of marriage?”

If they say no then they need to be called out on this.

SO GOP, TALK RADIO GET SOME BALLS AND SPEAK UP FOR FRIGGING ONCE ON YOUR COWARDLY ELITIST PATHETIC LIFE.

That say that but what they really mean is that the homostapo can sue anyone if one does not go with their anal fecal matter sex.

If they truly thought that this was about equality then they would let certain mormon churches and mosques marry more than one wife but of course we’ll not be hearing any of those questions as the media is on the lefts side, the GOP and most in talk radio do not want to offend their liberal pals and their homo pals so what we have left is the majority of folks who have a vote , sadly many will never hear about this, as the Dems woudl never run AD’s prclaiming their new position knowing they lost over 50% of the black and Hispanic vote and many blue coller workers.

and the polls are rocketing in their direction on this issue.

You have been listening to much to the leftist media spin and not enough to the facts. To see that you are wrong just read about the election in North Carolina (site of the Rat convention) two months ago in June. Traditional marriage won with over 60% of the vote. How is this "polls rocketing in their direction?"

RE: Only people that care are going to vote for Obama anyway.

I disagree. A ton of yellow-dog Democrats and undecideds who get their news from alphabet media have never really paid attention to the pro-gay extremist nonsense. If you could make the whole country look at some of the photos of the two Obama’s mouth-kissing same-genders, my liberal-to-moderate” family members would lose their enthusiasm for Dems faster than you can say “pervert.”

“these same darwin/evolutionists that claim moral superiority to us unenlightened neandrathals, seem to have a disconnect on how queers can survive evolution beyond a single generation...

that disconnect is merely the lies being re-packaged time and time again by the original liar and murderer, cloaked in the temporal ‘feel good’ of our base instincts... “

yep!
