Nuke ops halted after protesters enter TN complex

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) — Nuclear operations were temporarily halted Wednesday at a Tennessee complex that stores and processes uranium after three protesters, including a nun, were able to intrude into a high-security area over the weekend. The Y-12 National Security Complex said all nuclear material is safe.

The temporary stand-down was expected to end by next week. Special nuclear material will be moved to vaults on site, and contractor security personnel will undergo training and refresher instruction.

The protesters were found hanging banners in the dark and singing on Saturday and offering to break bread with the security guards at the Oak Ridge complex, officials said. They were arrested.

The nuclear complex regularly gets protesters and activists to the site around the August anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

I think the budget cuts have more to do with stimulus funds running out. ARRA has pumped billions into DOE. That’s the problem with jobs from government ‘stiumulus.’ The only way to keep them is to keep pumping the money into them, since they don’t generate any actual wealth.

I don’t understand these people. Dropping two nukes was an act of mercy over Japan fighting to every last man, woman and child.

They believe the propaganda, like somewhere around half of all Americans seem to want to.

I doubt they got even near anything important, but still an embarrassment.

They managed to get inside the plant itself. That is very serious and far more than an embarrassment. Worse the antiwar is trying to make them folk legends. www.knoxnews.com has a letter to the editor today trying to portray them as Prophets I kid you not. Letter: Nuclear protesters are prophets Notice though it is not a local person writing the praises of their deed.

The so called Prophets are in federal custody in Blount County Jail instead of Anderson where this took place for some reason. Perhaps access to the federal courthouse in downtown Knoxville is faster I'm not certain. Blount County accidently released a federal convicted felon a week or so ago. The felon has yet to be located.

They should have never seen the light of day.
Protestors? What protestors? No protestors here.
You say you plotted with them to enter a national
secure area? Too bad, hold out your hands while
we read you your rights.

The plan to cut up to 34 security police officer jobs at the Y-12 National Security Complex hasn’t changed, despite a breach of a high-security area early Saturday morning

Security at the plants are contracted. That needs to end and in house directly responsible D.O.E. hire their own security for the facility. This is a case where a federal security force to protect a national security key facility is clearly warranted.

I'm roughly 15 miles due east of the plants. Sometime I think it's this month more protesters will show up. These are ones who make an annual trip and stand at the gate to the facility except a few usually do try and cross into the plant.

What I want to know about the three so called Prophet's is how did they know where to cut and where to go once inside? It sounds like someone has been helping these type of groups by giving deatails about facilities.

The funny thing is, there are places they could get much more coverage- like invading a live TV news broadcast, for instance.

Indeed security personnel should not be eating anything given to them by protesters while on duty or about to go on duty.
