Bloomberg’s pro-breast-feeding initiative to lock away baby formula at 27 hospitals

The nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

“Baby formula is poison.”

Uh...if it weren’t for formula, my brother and I wouldn’t be alive today.

Coming: you don’t have to breast feed your baby - but those who don’t breast feed will be subject to a tax (direct any and all complaints to John Roberts).

I was 4 days in intensive care and pumped full of drugs after my son’s birth, then remained on drugs for weeks after

No BF for this Mom!

I suppose the nanny state would have forced my baby to use a wet nurse or another woman’s body fluids, in NYC, hopefully one without HIV

Don’t know what is the hIV/HepC rate for NYC women but it is rather high in DC

Yesterday: "Hit the bricks, Chick-fil-A... we don't allow your kind in New York City!"

Today: "Get rid of all baby formula! I mean, how can any man in his right mind... not be for breast feeding?"

Day after tomorrow: "We cannot stand by and allow people... to pick and choose in New York City! We know best!"

Next week: "Hummmm? What can I outlaw next? Where has my finger been? Whoa... that sure does smell good!

Bloomberg is such an idiot. My daughter has a medical condition that she takes medicine and was unable to breastfeed. I felt so bad for her because people look down their noses and hrumph that she bottlefed her baby. I wanted to slap a few strangers silly.

Folks, this is VERY STUPID.

My first daughter was born in a Japanese hospital that did not issue formula. My daughter had severe jaundice because my wife did not lactate for several days, days that my daughter spent under a UV lamp.

“Hizzoner has no basis to interfere in medical decisions, of course. But why would he need to do this? Hospitals already strongly encourage breast feeding. There's no question that it's better for the baby.”

Hizzoner is in the same personality class as Obummer, a full blown narcissistic control freak that thinks he is smarter than everyone else.

One very well known expert considers fructose a toxin, and talks a pretty good talk.

Fructose might be considered a toxin the way almost anything is a toxin. My wife is fructose intolerant so I know it can be a problem. Too much (like with anything, including water) is a problem with anybody.

That said, are you going to avoid the great number of all natural foods that are loaded with fructose? (e.g. strawberries, grapes, oranges)?

Now HFCS is a different animal, but not mainly because it is high fructose. That has to do more with how it gets manufactured.

You should slap them! I was raised on formula because I was RH-factor and I was allergic to mom! I grew up healthier than most kids.

It disturbs me that people called Guiliani “Mussolini” when we have a real one in illegal office. Maybe he can start shouting from the balcony at Gracie Mansion.

I think this is great.

It demonstrates to all what bloomers and his ilk would do to our freedoms if they get the power.

I sympathize with the women caught up in this idiocy, but they are a service to our nation for proving the point.

This is where we are headed, No detail not matter how small will escape the attention of despots.

Vote them out or we are doomed.

Nanny Bloomersberg must be channeling his inner frustrated grandma spirit and getting it cofused with his role as mayor. What normal male would want to be around this tyrant weasel busybody of a jerk.

He is going too far. Some women who want to breast feed don’t produce enough milk to provide for their baby and it is not that easy. There are problems with babies not knowing how to latch on and issues of premature babies not being capable of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is in many cases a wonderful experience, but it can also be painful, difficult and challenging. Women get breast infections, have duct problems, etc. As a mom who naturally fed 3 babies, I know of what I speak. And babies still need water in addition to breast milk in most cases. So Bloomberg does not have a clue.
