Bloomberg’s pro-breast-feeding initiative to lock away baby formula at 27 hospitals

The nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

This strikes me as odd.

Hizzoner has no basis to interfere in medical decisions, of course. But why would he need to do this? Hospitals already strongly encourage breast feeding. There's no question that it's better for the baby.

This will not bode well for the babies of drug-addicted mothers or the moms who become drug users.I would guess NYC has a good number of them.

As for the new moms who have difficulty with nursing, my heart goes out to them. Breast feeding is not always comfortable for a woman.

Nursing moms usually cannot take their babies to work with them either.

America is becoming less and less....well, American.

Baby formula is poison.

But what the hell does a mayor have to do with the decision? Are these mothers getting free medical services from the city?

Baby formula is poison.

That's a little strong. Infant mortality is high in poor countries for many reasons, but one contributor is breastfeeding failures. For most mothers/babies, breast milk is the best by far. For those who have issues, formula is a lifesaver. It's still second rate, but it's a whole lot better than malnutrition. Doctors should discourage formula, and every ob/gyn my wife had did, but they should also encourage this "poison" when necessary.

Next Dr bloomberg will limit how many ounces of breast milk a baby may have from each breast. Then he will limit the breast size a baby may feed from.

That just plain sounds crazy.
Whats next? Why not regulating the percentage of single ply to double ply toilet paper?

Is everyone in NYC insane?

A liberal is an addict. An addict that cannot possibly help him or herself from needlessly interfering in the lives of others. The reasons are all the same - better for society, better for yourself, better for ‘the children.’

Power, control (and the money and influence that comes with) are the underlying factors. It is in their twisted, deformed DNA and is so totally inbred in our elitist society, our government, our schools and in our media.

Not just a war on women. It is a war on the individual who can think for himself.

typical liberal fuzzythink
your body, your choice!

Except for breast feeding
and Big Gulps

locking up abortion tools would be a lot safer and healthier for baby

“[poison] That’s a little strong.”

One of the ingredients of baby formula is fructose, from HFCS and from sucrose, which has been implicated in “metabolic syndrome” including in infants and children. One very well known expert considers fructose a toxin, and talks a pretty good talk.

Liberals advocate “freedom of choice” as long as all you are going to do is kill the baby. I thought it was our body and our decision what we wanted to do. My kids were bottle fed and turned out fine! These socialist just can’t stand some capitalists that produce formula making a profit! The Government will probably double tax them. Are they going to force stores to take formula off their shelves??

My son would be dead were it not for formula. He is five years old and cannot take food by mouth. He has a jujenal feeding tube and cannot take blended foods through the tube either. It’s either formula or starve to death. I bristle at the suggestion that I am filling him full of “poison”. There are many reasons for a parent to give their child formula, and while I agree that it is second rate to breast milk, I just can’t call it poison when it has saved his life.

I went to tech school there, I certainly thought so at the time. Well, maybe not insane but certainly not normal. I think it comes from having too many people around you all of the time.
