California gun purchases nearing record
San Francisco Chronicle / SFGate.com ^ | Friday, July 27, 2012 | Henry K. Lee

Californians just can't get enough guns and are on a pace to set a new annual record for the number purchased legally.

Experts with the state Department of Justice predict residents will buy 725,000 rifles, pistols and shotguns in 2012, nearly twice the number they purchased five years ago, when 370,628 were acquired.

Over the last decade, annual purchases have increased despite the lackluster economy and a dramatic drop in crime.

The state doesn't record the personal history of those who purchase guns, nor their reasons for buying them, so it's hard to pinpoint a reason for the increase, experts say.

There are theories, however.

My theory is that the California’s dysfunction at state level is so obvious that no resident trusts the state government to protect or provide for them.

A bunch of people here are still proudly wearing rose-colored glasses. They also don spandex and ride their $5,000 bicycles to work (playing with death daily,) and they shop at Whole Foods. I saw a Volt on the road a few days back. Not much changed in CA.

However firearms and ammo will be the #1 currency after TSHTF. They can also last for decades with very little maintenance. And, unlike gold, you can actually use them. I stopped by Reed's recently, and the place was packed.

CA had tons of gun enthusiasts when I lived there. Full auto? no problem!

My how the place has changed.

California has more NRA members than any other state.

Over the last decade, annual purchases have increased despite the lackluster economy and have caused a dramatic drop in crime.

There.

Fixed.

“I sometimes eat at this fast food place where apparently a lot of welfare types dine.”

I sometimes dine in similar establishments; Obama has emboldened the “welfair types” to the point that they feel they not only are entitled to their government money, but also now completely justified in taking what ever they want from anyone or any establishment they feel is better off then them. I am sensing a break down in society. Those of us who frequently come into contact with this element know that many of them would kill or maim a fellow citizen for $20 if they thought they could get away with it. This along with the feeling that strict “gun control” is coming one way or another if Obama is somehow reelected is causing many to stock up or arm themselves before it is too late.

That may still be true, but they have had their rights eroded by the state.

It is my hope that they turn it around.

I know the place has plenty of conservatives.

I couldn’t find a source for NRA membership by state, which source are you using?

They'll simply have to reconnect with the average law-abiding citizen as a support as opposed to an enemy, which they obviously see us as.

It is quite possible that many people instinctively realize and know should this country continue under the current repressive and corrupt socialistic leadership that it is headed for the trash heap of history, and please don’t say it can not happen as it happened over and over in the past and this country is not too far away from it again. Along the way there may be upheaval as it usually happens, and nothing can beat being prepared. It is also a given that you can not win against too many “Others” may they be government related or otherwise, but at least you can have the satisfaction to take a few with you along the way.

Thomas Jefferson knew only knew too well when he stated “The tree of Liberty needs to be watered from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants” Needless to say with some one currently at the helm of this rudderless ship, called the US, aimlessly going all over the map anything is possible

Just say it. Black populations commit murder at rates 6X-8X that of white populations. Hispanics are in the 2X-4X range, if memory serves. Whites in the USA commit murder at rates similar to Northern European countries.

Until we are willing to talk about this plainly, and deal with the cultural issues involved, we will never be able to solve the problem. That we tiptoe around this at Free Republic shows how far we are from that point.

only 35-40 a week? They see that as a measure? There is one gun shop in Jacksonville that turns away people each week for its CCW classes and their classroom holds 100. So consider all of the other gun shops in this city/county and you get a feel for how things are going here.

Strict gun control? We’ll also we’ll have ammo control via EPA leaning on producers and shooting ranges. Toxic metals are bad in bullets but not light bulbs don’t ya know.

I looked and couldn’t find a source, I have to assume that you couldn’t either, other than that, if you look at post 36 I was offering up some hope for the loser state of California.
