The shooting suspect in the Colorado theater rampage was seeing a university psychiatrist specializing in schizophrenia in the weeks before the July 20 attack, according to court records released Friday.

James Holmes was seeing Lynne Fenton, the director of student mental health services at the University of Colorado and a medical school professor. Holmes was a first-year graduate student in a neuroscience Ph.D. program.

Fenton, medical director of the counseling facility, has written numerous papers and launched research in the area of schizophrenia. She did not respond to calls to her home and office.

Before we rush to crucify Dr. Fenton (and I am no fan of shrinks), we should find out what kind of legal roadblocks would have been in the way of her notifying authorities of what had come out of her sessions with Holmes.

I've yet to witness an exorcism; I've yet to even see the attempt made. But I would be fascinated to see what a little time with a Bible and a man of God could accomplish with Holmes.

Interesting:

http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/07/25/packaged-warning-psychiatrist-protocol-when-receiving-threats-from-patients/

Psychiatrists who knowingly do not notify authorities when receiving this kind of information are subject to civil suits as well as disciplinary action from licensing authorities, Ablow said.

If a person is named in a patient’s threat, psychiatrists are required to go one step further. In a Supreme Court of California case known as the Tarasoff case, a patient had confided with a psychiatrist that he had intentions of killing a girl he had been stalking. While the psychiatrist contacted the police about detaining his patient, he did not notify the woman herself, and she was later stabbed and killed by the patient.

The Tarasoff case ruling set a precedent that mental health professionals would be required to notify people who had been specifically named by their patients as targets for harm.

“If it’s a named victim, that person has to be alerted,” Ablow said. “If James Holmes had said these three people by name are intended, even if [his psychiatrist] did tell police, [they] still have to alert the people named and tell them this person has said he intends to take your life.”

“So the first question: Was this his psychiatrist?” Ablow added. “If it was… if he thought this would constitute a significant threat, he would have been required to put Holmes in a locked psychiatric unit even if it required police intervention.”

However, First noted that it can sometimes be difficult to determine whether or not something a patient says in confidence is a significant danger or if it’s just expressing thoughts that they can’t say to anyone else.

As a university professor, the odds are that Lynne Fenton is a Democrat and 0-supporter. She may even support 0-care. If this is true, we can play the blame game too.

Based upon “studies” they say the higher your education the more likely you are to be a liberal....ergo, the shooter was a liberal since he was a PhD student.

She would have to have be aware a crime was going to be committed. Just because he was seeing her doesn’t mean he told her what he was planning. It does further prove the profession is junk science that does more harm than good, but I agree, wait for the facts to emerge before jumping the gun on crusifiction

Dr. Fenton, if this man was deeply disturbed and killed all those people, how do you FEEL about that?

She has kind of a crazy smile herself. My wild guess is she was away on vacation when her patient went berserk. He felt abandoned and this pushed him over the edge

When the shooting first occurred, a business acquaintance was asking me (politely) about the usual gun control issues that usually arise after an incident of this sort. I answered all his questions (politely) and then mentioned to him that I would not be surprised to discover that the shooter was being treated for mental health issues and possibly medicated for same.
IIRC, quite of few of the perpetrators of these mass shootings in recent years had similar histories which strangely never get mentioned in the MSM.

Seems like every college is in the health care business...

CU-Boulder has a policy requiring all students have a health insurance plan during their time at CU. You must select or waive the university insurance by September 5, 2012 or you will be automatically enrolled in the Student Gold Health Insurance Plan and billed $1,363 for the fall semester.

Ahh, yes, the scam continues...

My son at one point of his career worked as a social worker with the homeless mentally ill. Twice the police notified him he was a “named Person” and to get out of town until the threat was in custody.

Even though laws are in place nothing can keep them in an institution for very long until after they've committed a major crime Usually they are turned out on the steets as homeless. ....
