GRAND FORKS, British Columbia - Christian owners of a bed and breakfast in British Columbia have been ordered to pay around $4,500 in damages after they refused to rent a room to a homosexual couple.
Brian Thomas and Shaun Eadie had reserved a room at the Riverbend B&B in Grand Forks in June 2009, but owners Les and Susan Molnar cancelled the reservation after realizing they were homosexual.
“To allow a gay couple to share a bed in my Christian home would violate my Christian beliefs and would cause me and my wife great distress,” Lee explained in tribunal documents.
Thomas and Eadie filed a complaint with the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal, which ruled in their favour on Tuesday. Tribunal member Enid Marion ordered the Molnars to “cease and desist the discriminatory conduct,” though they closed the B&B down in September 2009 as a result of the incident.

A lesson can be learned here. If you are an employer or proprietor of a business and find yourself in the position to deny someone a job, a room, etc, never ever disclose the real reasons why. Always have a boilerplate story researsed and ready to go for when the lawyers show up.

How about William Buckley? I remember a remark of his about school bussing ( remember school bussing ? ) saying words to the effect that many were thinking that this had crossed some kind of line, "but there are those of us that thought this line had been crossed a long time ago." That remark was an epiphany for me.
And by the way, what about school bussing? There were all these court imposed plans and giant upheavels, and the whole thing just faded away, lost to the memory of the public, the courts, and everybody. What does that tell you about the rule of law?
Actually, Mark Steyn won his case before the BC Human Rights Tribunal ... the case was so weak that even they could not rule for the complainants. They tried the case in BC after Ontario’s tribunal refused to hear it.
Anyway, this is one of the many reasons to oppose same sex marriage rights, you can expect all sorts of legal interference in small business and religious freedoms to follow (as we have seen in Canada).

Not in Canada where this took place. Americans should be vigilant about protecting our Bill of Rights. They are priceless.

For pharmacists who may be compelled to provide abortion drugs and object to doing so, there are a couple of options. (1) They can carry the drug, as required, but close for the day any time they are presented with a morally repugnant prescription, "sorry, not feeling well enough to take any more prescriptions, I'll try to get those I have filled before we close," or after spilling the contents from the pill bottle. (2) "oops, I had it in stock as required by law but dropped my remaining supply on the floor, perhaps you could go elsewhere." It would be better if pharmacists and all free Americans could be honest, and stand up for their rights even if it means jail, but the far left would just give their money to the baby killers and the media would refuse to cover the story honestly. You do what you can.
As an employer (former, I no longer have employees), I stopped trying to provide helpful suggestions to job applicants years ago. You might help a few people, but if you say anything you'll lose to the parasites.

Yes, and Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell would agree that government imposed discrimination was the problem. Once the government can force you to do business (or not do business) with certain people, it can expand that dictate to any number of groups or kinds of people. Freedom of association means what it says, or it should.
As for minorities not being able to eat at restaurants, etc. that would not happen (except where government prohibited businesses from serving certain people, as with Jim Crow laws). Business owners who pursued such a policy on their own would soon find themselves out of business. The free market is the best promoter of equal opportunity.
The same should apply to hiring and firing employees. Let the market work!
There was a bed and breakfast in 2004 that would not permit guests who voted for Bush (or had Bush bumper stickers) to stay there. The “discrimination codes” do not include politics so they were within their right. Same for the bidnesses that rejected conservatives (there were some software firms that said they would deny employment on this basis).
The Hollywood blacklist against subversive Communists in allegiance with Stalin’s Soviet Union was somehow considered a “bad” thing (even though Hollywood studios circumvented the blacklist by using pseudonyms and ghost writer credits). When it happens to Christian owned restaurants and those who voted GOP, it’s “a good moral stance”.
