Bloomberg Suggests Police Stop Protecting People Until Gun Control Enacted

Appearing as a guest on Monday's Piers Morgan Tonight, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recommended that America's police officers should go on strike and refuse to protect people until gun control legislation which would allegedly make them safer is enacted. Bloomberg:

(Video can be found here.)

Well, I would take it one step further. I don't understand why the police officers across this country don't stand up collectively and say we're gonna go on strike, we're not gonna protect you unless you, the public, through your legislature, do what's required to keep us safe.

Well, they have strict gun control in Chicago and that has been such a resounding success in reducing the murder rate.

Bloomberg is clearly all talk — if he put this idea into practice it would undoubtably work very well, crime would go down and people would realize how useless a lot of police work really is.

The police do not directly protect anyone. They have no mandate to do so. You can’t sue them in court for failing to protect you, even if they were physically around you at the time.

Given their new m/o is “officer safety” above every other thing, now, even when they screw up and kill homeowners believing they are being home invaded, I would rather be armed and have the police go on strike.

Exactly. Police do not protect you they just draw a white line around your corpse. I’m in one of those states that do not let you protect yourself, so I will take Bloomberg’s challenge only if they let me carry first.

What a stupid, irresponsible, arrogant thing to say.

This is the kind of talk that pushes the right buttons for some nutjob.

Ummm . . . but, Nanny Bloomers, most rank and file members of the police force support gun rights and gun ownership by the public. It's only the political appointees--like big city police chiefs--who support your totalitarian ideas.

I doubt the cops would go out on your little strike (unless they were very well paid to do it by some skunk like you).

What a great idea. We could defend ourselves.

Let's face it, most of our police effort is diverted to revenue raising for governments and lawyers. The crackdown on drunk driving has just given us a lot of young men no longer able to provide for their children because they can't drive. The War on Drugs has become just the best way to increase profits.

Maybe we could fire the SWAT teams.

The trouble is that the police would go on strike EXCEPT for arresting people who protect themselves, with firearms for example.

If the police would go on strike entirely I’ll bet that crime would drop. This isn’t meant to be an insult to the police, just an observation that we could protect ourselves a lot better than we do in this country if it were allowed.

What an idiot! Doesn't he realize that this would have the exact opposite effect of what he wants? If the police go on strike the first thing everybody is going to do is rush to the gun store to buy a gun to protect their home and families with. The only thing Bloomberg would accomplish is selling 10 million more guns.

It’s one of the reasons I moved from Seattle to central KY. One of MANY related reasons. And traffic.

If 30 people in that audience of what, a thousand?, had CC on them, that would have been a much different scene.

Bloomberg is an idiot.

Bloomberg is a menace and quite possibly nuts. For a NYC Mayor to even in passing suggest the cops go on strike should be cause for immediate removal from office. Not to mention a strike by the police dept is most likely illegal.

Of course the sanitation and transit workers have gone on strike in the past, but never fire or police. It’s just insane to suggest such a thing.

I personally think a very limited number of police should be chosen from among the people of each neighborhood and town. Someone with direct ties to the neighborhood and isn’t isolated from the results of their behavior. In fact most of them should be part time.

I grew up in a town with a part time constable who mostly took noise complaints from little old ladies and told us kids to keep it down.
