Rep. Rosa DeLauro: Congress Should Consider Federal Tax on Soda Pop

(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) said on Wednesday that Congress ought to look at imposing a federal tax on soda pop.

“We have to address the situation in the marketplace," DeLauro said at a press conference on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. "Right now, the least expensive beverages are often those with the least value to our health like regular cola or juice drinks that are only 10 percent juice.

“But I will tell you that if you’re paying $3.49 for juice and 79 cents for soda, if you are in a low-income family and you have to stretch the dollar, you don’t need a rocket scientist to tell you what you’re going to buy,” DeLauro said. “You’re going to go for the 79 cents.

"And maybe, quite frankly," she said, "one of the things that we ought to look at and one of the things we ought to consider is a soda tax.

“Maybe we ought to look at that amongst several other areas that we are looking at in terms of nutrition," she said.

"Look, the point is: This is a critical, critical issue," DeLauro said. "We need to work together. And I, really, I beg you for your energy and your interest in all of this right now.”

If the federal government ever taxes ugly, Ms DeLauro will be in the top tax bracket.

When I buy juice I am buying the juice from a fruit, when I am buying soda I am buying 5 cents worth of concentrated syrup and the rest is water. That is the difference in the product. I know it, she knows it, the world knows it.

Let me make that decision and STF out of my life dipstick.

So let me get this straight. She’s helping the poor who can’t afford $3.49 for juice by raising the cost of the item they can afford? Truly, Liberalism is a mental disease.

What we need is a tax on Ugly in New England.

Or, a tax on the Democrat Socialist Caucus in the U.S. House.

They could solve so many problems...global warming, unemployment, high blood pressure among the citizens, two thirds of the reasons for boredom in the world, spending deficits at all levels...the list goes on...if...

They would just levy a tax to be paid by windbag politicians i.e. every word that came from a windbag politician would generate, say, a quarter.

They could hire the unemployed, hand them tape recorders, and put a team of them on every windbag politician. Revenuers could sit in offices and count the words.

Great Caesar's Ghost! There is a litany of problems we could solve.

DeLauro is a major embarrassment to Connecticut, among a wealth of embarrassments. But, the idiots in her district will vote her back into office where she can continue to inflict Communism on America.

Arg! You totally beat me to it. Great minds, as they say.

Consider this stain on the Well of the House, and what it says about the State of State of Connecticut.

What reasoning power. Juice costs 3.79, and "pop" costs 0.79. (Though, obviously the Congress-creature hasn't invested in your average 2-litre Coke or Pepsi very often lately...

The woman's answer, for all those powerless poor people out there is to increase the cost of the cheap alternative.

Cost is not the issue, though she evokes the concern, it's as empty as the empty calories in the Clark Bars she has stashed in her desk. It's behavior modification among the poor, and not the rich.

Sorry, but every we've been forced to watch Rosa "Mo" DeLauro take the microphone on the House floor it's drives the audience away from C-SPAN in droves.

What is it about CT that vomits up this sort of person as their representative?

She wants to raise the cost of something food stamp recipients aren’t paying for anyway.

I have friend who works at a grocery store and she says you can spot who takes food stamps because they can and who takes them because they need them. The food stamp abuses don’t care about value and buy all kinds of crap. The few that need food stamps for a while are shopping for values and generally spends all at once on real food.

"Look, the point is: This is a critical, critical issue," DeLauro said. "We need to work together. And I, really, I beg you for your energy and your interest in all of this right now.”

OK Ms. DeLauro I will give you my energy and interest in this matter.

The first matter of importance in this subject is for you to recognize that you are not only a moron, but a ignorant moron. I know that statement is redundant, but since your mind is slow, I felt it needed repeating.

You expose your ignorance on several subjects in one sentence. Yes, I know, most libtards usually do when the try to form a sentence.

First question you should have asked yourself . . . WHY is fruit drinks so damn expensive?

Lets see . . . Uhmmm yup, government rules, regulations tariffs and farming limitations that your little government found sooooo damn important to institute to protect the ignorant

Second question is . . . Is your suggestion the PURPOSE of government? Of course you believe that to be so. By God the masses are stupid and so you feel the need to protect them from themselves.

Now I have to admit, after 2008 even I am beginning to believe the above sentence. If Obamination gets elected again, I might become a firm believer on the ignorance of the masses.

But more importantly, Ms. DeLauro . . . Have you ACTUALLY compared the ingredients in a soft drink verse fruit juice??

Lets see . . . Of course not all, but in many brand names, the calories are more in a fruit drink than a soda. Minute Maid Orange Juice 120 calories per serving vs Coca Cola 100 calories

Sugar and Sodium is approximately equivalent. Of course many will argue much of the sugar in a fruit drink is natural therefore not as harmful. I would concur. However, fruit drinks also contain artificial coloring and sweeteners that can more harmful than that in a soda.

The real point, aside from the fact that you are a moron, processed food today of any source can be harmful to a persons body. Education and discipline and individual choice used to be operative words in my country.

Note to self . . . Layoff all employees, close the shop. Advise all 350 personnel affected, that the government can now take care of you, considering their leader told me I did not build this business, someone else did. I go home!

I have a bettr idea. Why not subtract 5% of lawmakers salary for each new tax they enact.

Well, I guess we know it’s constitutional.

Back in the good ol’ days, the federal government taxed things like whiskey. It was one of the earliest taxes levied and sparked major resistance in “The Whiskey Rebellion”.

The “Cola Rebellion” doesn’t have the same ring. Are we gonna have to put up with the paper tax labels like we do on booze bottles and cigarettes?

Oh, and regarding the $3.49 juice versus the 79 cent soda, the example is pitting a higher than average juice price versus a rock bottom (for large bottles) soda price. They do the same thing with water, where they compare the cost of tap water or gasoline to Evian, rather than a milk jug sized jug of spring water from the supermarket.

In reality the 2 liter soda will be more like $1.39 in the supermarket, and inexpensive juices (e.g. Juicy Juice) can be had for a lot less than $3.49. What’s more, if your problem is obesity or blood sugar, too much juice is as bad as too much soda.
