Shocking: Reports Indicate Suspect of ‘Dark Knight’ Shootings Was a Camp Counselor
The Blaze ^ | July 21, 2012 | Erica Ritz

Bill Dedman, an investigative reporter for msnbc.com, is reporting that the suspect in the horrifying shooting in Aurora, Colorado was a camp counselor in the summer of 2008 for underprivileged children in Glendale, California.

NBC News has more information:

Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles confirmed that [James] Holmes was a cabin counselor, responsible for 10 children at its Camp Max Straus for children ages 7 to 14 from Los Angeles. Holmes was then a 20-year-old student at the University of California, Riverside, and neighbors have said he was active in the Presbyterian church that the family attended. The camp is nonsectarian.

A statement from the group said, “His role was to [ensure] that these children had a wonderful camp experience by helping them learn confidence, self esteem and how to work in small teams to effect positive outcomes. These skills are learned through activities such as archery, horseback riding, swimming, art, sports and high ropes course.”

A fellow counselor told NBC News that Holmes seemed shy.

“The entire staff was really close, considering we lived together, except for James,” said the counselor, who asked that she not be named. “He really kept to himself and hardly ever went on any trips with the rest of the staff. He was very shy and reserved.”

To me, one of the most telling reports was one of the first ones - his mother was reported on Drudge as saying, “You have the right guy.”

My guess is she’s been worrying about her son going off for some time, but family’s hands are often tied with situations like this.

There is often to do. I have a lot of bipolar friends. They will be having major problems and the families BEG hospitals to take them in, and get refused.

For every loner who goes ballistic, there are millions who never harm a flea.

Yes, and I think trying to develop profiles for serial killers and mass murderers and other extreme criminals is mostly a waste of time. As you illustrate, whatever profile they come up with, for every one that commits an atrocious crime, tens of thousand, or hundreds of thousands, or more, of others who fit the profile never commit a single aggressive act, let alone a violent crime.

If they had “done something”, what might that have looked like? We are so concerned about our 4th Amendment rights these days that there are bound to be incidents like this and I’m willing to bet this won’t be the last one.

Oh my, I cannot pass this one up..... Does this mean that when the D.I. chewed your a$$, he literally chewed it? :-)

Are you sure you worded that right?

A simple visit by the police may have changed history.

... and what would the police say & do on such a visit?

Bingo.

A lot of people want these tragedies to stop happening -- but the only way this stuff will ever really stop happening is if society is turned into a prison, and anyone who "might be different" is moved into solitary confinement.

Liberty means dealing with the imperfectness of human nature. If you give up freedom in order to acquire security, you will end up with neither freedom nor security.

That is why when they ask his mother..she said they had the right man.

My wife has 25 plus years in the field of taking care of SMI people. She says that at the last estimate, there are about 3 million people on the streets that are SMI with homicidal tendencies. As long as they are on their meds, they are fine. One problem though, since the funding for organizations that deal with these people is at a all time low, these people are left to their own devices and they often get off their meds because, they think since they feel fine, they not longer need them. That is where they really go off.

My wife was a case worker who's job was to go to these peoples places of residencies and actually make sure they took their meds. She had one, who's parents were supposed to do this and they didnt. The result is that he went off and took his dads pickup truck, rammed three private cars, rammed a cop car and tried to run over the cop, got onto the freeway and there was a hell of a chase for a while. They shot him-he survived, and they took him to the state farm for a intense tune up-yes, they actually call it that.

Both the Gifford shooter and this guy were SMI, homicidal and many have grand delusional symptoms. That is why he and the Gifford's shooter both smiled. They got attention and are actually got their jollys out of it. These people are also susceptible to outside influence and will ‘do it’ instead of talk about it. Remember Hinckly-they guy who shot Reagan?

I kind of figured you typed that in haste and didn't mean it to come out that way.

My eyes are so tired I had to reread it several times to make sure they weren't playing tricks on me.

Loner is definitely a risk category for people who eventually snap and slaughter others out of anger, loneliness, and jealousy.

I’m still waiting to hear if he was ADHD and given Ritalin or other psychotropic anti-depressant.

I don’t think we will ever clearly understand what caused this guy to go postal. I’m not sure that most of us can understand what is not rational.

What I find scary is that there really is no way to prevent someone from going over the edge like this. Were it not firearms, he would have found other means....he did have numerous explosives prepared.

Also, now we will go through another ridiculous period like we do after one of these senseless events where everyone becomes hyper paranoid. Perfectly harmless persons will be harrassed by employers as “potential killers” because they are a little strange or “passionate” about and issue (notice I said passionate not violent - too many don’t understand the difference).
