SALT LAKE CITY — A former Boy Scout leader and hospital employee will go to prison for collecting and making child pornography.
Third District Judge Robin Reese on Monday sentenced Shawn Thomas Whiting, 34, to a one- to-15-year prison term on four second-degree felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Whiting pleaded guilty to the charges in April.
He originally faced a total of 20 counts of the same charge, but the 16 additional counts were dismissed in exchange for the man's plea. Reese ordered the man to pay for the cost of counseling for his victims.
The Utah Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was conducting an investigation last year when it discovered Whiting was advertising child pornography files to share. Agents found hundreds of explicit images of young boys at his Taylorsville home and then worked with members of the Idaho ICAC Task Force to identify a victim living in Idaho.
Until he was arrested last November, Whiting worked for Intermountain Health Care as a registrar at LDS Hospital and Alta View Hospital and had previously served as a Boy Scout leader.
"This is a sad reminder that people who collect child pornography often abuse children and manufacture and distribute images of their own crimes," said assistant attorney general Paul G. Amann. "However, this case is also a great example of how law enforcement agencies from different states can work together to bring justice to a sex offender."
Pray for the minor male victims involved in this case -- and please think of them first.

Based on some of the gigantic British mass arrests for CP, the percentage of actual pedos was quite small compared to the total number of CP downloaders.
Not ironically, about the same relative percentage of homosexuals are also pedos. That is, while a lot of adult homos are attracted to children of their gender, only a fraction act on that attraction.
From the opposite direction, it is well established that pedos will go out of their way to become involved with children, so organizations with children, like the Boy Scouts, must have very strict screening.
This is a logical reason to keep homosexual men away from Boy Scouts, because even if a male heterosexual has pedophilic tendencies, if he is attracted to underage girls, he is likely not a threat to underage boys. But if a homosexual man has pedophilic tendencies, it will be indistinguishable from his homosexual proclivities.

If people were really concerned about this, the Boy Scouts would be SHUT DOWN to remove an opportunity for access to children.

No reason top shut down the Boy Scouts , they are a great organisation. They just have to keep a watchful eye on who they place in charge .
It’s pretty much an unwritten rule in my Son’s Troop that Boy Scout Leaders have to have a son in the Troop.
It’s the same with Youth coaches, I only trust those who have one of their kids on the team.
