PAWLENTY GETS A SECOND LOOK: Mitt Romney has already made his decision on who he’ll pick as his running mate, an announcement which could come this week, according to a New York Times report, and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who shares a close relationship with the Romney family and has become an energetic cheerleader for the GOP nominee, sits at the top of the list four years after he was passed over for the number two spot by John McCain. “After a short-lived presidential bid of his own last year, Mr. Pawlenty is again being considered for the Republican ticket. His fate is in the hands of Mr. Romney, a rival-turned-friend, who is on the cusp of announcing his vice-presidential selection. Mr. Romney has reached a decision, his friends believe, and he may disclose it as soon as this week,” the

Portman is acceptable on many issues, but he has glaring weaknesses on immigration. He’s WAYYYYY too soft on that subject. To wit (per www.ontheissues.org):

Subject: Illegals earn citizenship

Policy position: Supports (!!!!!!)
Rated 0% by FAIR, indicating a voting record loosening immigration.
Supports Granting amnesty to illegal immigrants(!!!!!!)
Supports Full implementation of current border security laws.
YES on more immigrant visas for skilled workers.
YES on extending Immigrant Residency rules.
NO on reporting illegal aliens who receive hospital treatment(!!!!!)

IMO, Martinez hits on all cylinders... competence, conservatism and the demographics, as well as geographic reach.

Rom-Paw sounds like speech impediment of Ron Paul.

Personally, I would have preferred Palin/Ryan but no one asked me.

You don’t think the media would beat this to death until everyone knows about it? Right now most people don’t even know there’s a controversy about who is a natural-born citizen, even the relatively well informed. It will scare off the voters who don’t understand it without the same rule being applied to Obama.

Even if (and I think it’s a big if) a court should decide this case, the argument will be made that it is the role of the congress to define NBC and not the courts.

There are only two probably outcomes of a court challenge:

1) an activist court will expand the definition of NBC to mean anyone born a citizen.

2) a court will dismiss the case on the basis that it is the responsibility of congress to define NBC, and absent such a definition the court can’t make a decision.

No court is going to declare a born-citizen not to be a NBC in the absence of a clarifying definition by congress. It just ins’t going to happen—ever.

Ronald Reagan himself as a candidate cannot make up for the fact that we are going to have a non Conservative, weak, indecisive, non prinicipled disaster at the top of the ticket.

I’ve been told he has a record of picking good conservative judges. I don’t know the specifics, but if true, it would be a good influence on Romney in that important area.

The media will not beat this to death because:

1) it would raise the issue of Obama’s NBC status.

2) many of the Democrats up and comers are 1st generation Americans.

3) the media has been pushing the idea that born-citizen = NBC for so long that it has been drilled into the head of the public.

#1 is the main reason though. The media is not going to push anything that could possibly backfire onto Obama. This would.

“I’d be willing to be(t) your house on it.

lolololol How about betting yours?

Jindal is ineligible per Article II of the Constitution....why do we have to keep pointing this out?

Natural Born Citizen = Born in a country to parents who are it’s citizens. Bobby’s parents were here on a student visa from India.....not eligible, just like Rubio.....Pay attention this time folks.

Note that under the 14th Amendment both Jindal and Rubio are born citizens with no need to naturalize, though they were included when their oparents naturalized, so they are double covered as citizens. In any case not Natural Born Citizens.

And exactly how would your NBC definition get enforced?

A court will never agree the hear the case.

Congress will never take action.

98% of Americans don’t agree with your definition.

As a practical matter, how would you enforce your definition—exactly how?

Romney needs to blunt the left’s meme of “the white-bread GOP trying to unseat the historic 1st black president.”

I doubt there is much more Romney can do to pick up minority votes. But, there were plenty of moderate/swing-voters that voted for Obama simply out of “white guilt” and wanted to see the 1st black president so we could put some of our racial past behind us.

The Democrats will try and play on that white guilt again. “Don’t kick out the 1st black president, and replace him with a white guy; think of how it will set back racial progress.” Putting a minority on the ticket (like Jindal) will blunt that meme as the GOP will be able to argue that we got past the racial stuff in 2008, and now we’ve moved to the point where we can vote based on “a person’s character, not their skin color.”

Jindal simply isn’t eligible. A fairly strong case can be made for Rubio, but there is no case that can be made for Jindal being a natural born citizen.

His folks came to America on student visas and not as approved immigrants.

His mother was, in fact, ALREADY pregnant with him when they arrived, and he was born a few short months afterwards.

Since it takes a number of years even to receive one’s citzenship, there is no way that they could have sought out citizenship and had the residency requirement prior to his birth.

IOW, his parents were the subjects of India when they arrived, when he was born, and for some time afterwards, probably up into his elementary years.

In short, Jindal was born a citizen of India to parents who were citizens of India who were simply studying in the USA. If “natural born citizen” means this, then it is simply a useless requirement, because it can mean anything.

OK, but how does he stand the test of the Natural Born clause? Everytime either Jindal or Marco Rubio’s names are brought up, inevitably the question of meeting the constitutional requirement arises.

brilliant,,you show me yours Obama, I'll show you mine;-)

I love how out-of-touch Team Romney is with the grassroots.
Pawlenty is going to solve his problem with the base, Conservatives, and Tea Partiers?

What a joke!

He’s a Romney stooge. Picking Pawlenty would be a big thumb-in-the-eye to the base. It’s like Gaston picking LeFool, or Jafar picking Iago. Mitt might as well pick one of his brothers.

You’ve got Jindal, Ryan, Gingrich, Rubio, Palin (Yes, I know, no chance), among others, available. Why do we keep hearing about moderate squishes who’ve wagged their fingers at the base (Pawlenty), Social Progressives (Rice), and their ilk? Does Team Romney thin the problem is that the ticket is already too Conservative?

According to Lynch v Clarke and the 14th amendment, Jindal would be eligible.
