Time Mag Editor: 'Only Thing Weaker Than the Economy Is Romney's Electoral Skills'

"The only thing weaker than the economy is Mitt Romney's electoral skills."

Such was actually said on CBS's Face the Nation Sunday by Rana Foroohar, Time magazine's assistant managing editor in charge of economics and business (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Time Mag Editor: 'The Only Thing Weaker Than the Economy Is Romney's Electoral Skills'

BOB SCHIEFFER, HOST: Let me-- let me go to Rana because you-- you wrote something very interesting the other day. You said that since 1967 when consumer confidence is as low as it is right now the incumbent is always defeated. Does that mean this thing is already over?

RANA FOROOHAR (TIME Magazine): Well, you know, I actually think that we're on the verge of a historic upset. That's true, the statistic that you just gave. And it would make you think that Obama has no chance of winning this election. But I think this election is going to hinge on middle-class pain. I think that people know that what's happened in the last four years have not been down to Obama's policies, it's about globalization, it's about the rise of technology. Each recovery since the early 1990s has been weaker and taken longer than the one before. So this is a-- this is a twenty-year problem. This is not a three- or four-year problem and I think that whoever can best speak to the middle-class is the person that's going to win.

BOB SCHIEFFER: Well, what do you mean when you say a historic upset?

RANA FOROOHAR: Well, I think that traditionally if you had consumer confidence numbers that were this weak and growth that was this low, there would be no chance that the incumbent is going to win, but, frankly, I think the only thing weaker than the economy is Mitt Romney's electoral skills. And I think he hasn't really put himself in a good position for this debate over the middle class.

"The only thing weaker than the economy is Mitt Romney's electoral skills."

And this woman has an editing function at Time.

Pretty scary, don't you think?

You will celebrate Obama’s victory? Why would you do that?

What you should be doing is leaving the Republican party for shoving their fair-haired boy down your throat.

No xzins is a good guy, but many conservatives are ignoring the reality that it is either Obama or Romney, there is no third choice.

Do I trust Romney-No!

But we can deal with him later, we know what Obama is doing to the nation.

If the economy is the only thing that defeats Obama, we really are in some serious trouble.

How about Obamacare, which has been defeated everytime an election has been held on it?

How about 'Gay marriage'?

Even many Blacks are recoiling on that one!

The list goes on and one.

Obama is out of touch with middle America, he conned the American People the first time, but he can't now.

Her name is the Latin word for “frog.” Someone should ask her why her parents thought their baby girl should be named “Frog.”

Hey I am all for going 3rd Party, but now is not the time, we are winning in crucial Senate and House seats and can take back the Party.

If the GOP doesn't do what it suppose to do after winning in Nov. (e.g.repeal Obamacare) it will become the Whig Party and disappear.

But now is not the time to leave it when the tide is shifting, like it did before Reagan took over.

______________________________________________

You know, if I've heard a version of this idiotic statement once, I've heard it a million times from you anti-Romney folks.

OK, I'll go slow so I don't confuse you: Romney won the majority of electoral votes in the individual state primaries. Let me further explain how this works; the voter goes into the polling booth, and voluntarily votes for the candidate of their choice. Now, if you have credible evidence that the GOP-e had goons at the polling places threatening GOP voters, please provide your proof. If not, your comments smack of a person who is pi$$ed that their candidate didn't win the primary.

BTW, so I'm not labeled a “Romneybot”, my first choice was Palin, then Cain, then Newt/Santorum. If memory serves, didn't these candidates opt out for personal reasons, and when it was apparent Romney clinched the overall win?

I'm willing to believe your conspiracy if you can provide proof that the GOP-e used thug tactics to give Romney the win...

Everyone agrees there are great issues, ftD. Your problem is that you’re riding the wrong horse.

Yep, the one with the best lies and the most money always wins. Anyone else notice the irony? Now I know what they mean by “what goes around , comes around”

Sounds like you want to stay with the loser rino. I’d like to convince you otherwise, artcore.

So far as evidence, I watched the so-called conservative media, because I always watched the conservative media. I KNOW when someone is in the tank for someone else. I KNOW when they’re carrying water for them.

Go back and watch the coverage. It is certain. It is the evidence. I’ll wouldn’t be surprised that even you posted comments to that effect during the primary campaigns.

He was carried across the line by the GOP-E talking heads, by complicit conservative media, by a huge spending advantage, and by cross-over voting.

Let me again suggest that you should switch sides. Since you are backing a losing horse anyway, you might as well vote for a conservative.

"'The Only Thing Weaker Than the Economy Is Romney's Electoral Skills'"

She is overlooking the total ineptitude of the RNC. We are facing a perfect storm of stupidity this election. My tagline says it all.

Vote the most conservative candidate in every race, ftD.

That will make sure House and Senate are covered.

Romney, however, is a loser, so you might as well vote for the conservative running against him in your state.

I wish that the “we can deal with him later” part would be, completely and in a fool-proof manner, worked out now, so that the majority of conservative voters would, then, have another reason to, actually, vote for Mitt Romney, this November. Mitt could lose, because not enough conservative voters end up voting for the ‘12 GOP ticket. Having the final two major choices for ‘12 POTUS/VPOTUS be between two leftists isn’t an incentive for all non-leftist voters to vote for either one, this November!

I want Time to remember these results and how they played it.

Bill Clinton (Dem) 43.01%
George H. W. Bush (Rep) 37.54%
Ross Perot (Ind) 18.91%

Now compare this to how they treated Governor Walker.

Scott Walker (Rep) 53.1%
Tom Barrett (Dem) 46.3%

Come election time when Romney wins I am going to be using the word ‘mandate’ quite a lot to describe all the Obama era changes we’ll need to roll back.

"I'll repeat myself above, cherry. Read it and weep...Santorum was right....a worse candidate could not have been chosen."
"[Romney is] a guy who has gone through that pressure cooker, who has developed a passion, who understands why he's a conservative and understands the issues, how they weave together."

Santorum added that conservatives are "about traditional values and a traditional way of American life" and that Mitt Romney "understands that, it's not just in his head anymore, it's in his heart." -- Rick Santorum, February, 2008

"The family and its foundational role in America’s economic success, a central point of our campaign, was discussed at length. I was impressed with the Governor’s deep understanding of this connection and his commitment to economic policies that preserve and strengthen families. He clearly understands that having pro-family initiatives are not only the morally and economically right thing to do, but that the family is the basic building block of our society and must be preserved.

Above all else, we both agree that President Obama must be defeated," Santorum writes in the email. The task will not be easy. It will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious. Governor Romney will be that nominee and he has my endorsement and support to win this the most critical election of our lifetime." --Rick Santorum, May, 2012
