I think napscoordinator was referring to the state of the primary race at the time the Republican Establishment forced Santorum out for their boy, Romney.

We were told over and over that Romney was the only one that could win. OK, D-fender, now that they have forced him down our throats, he had damn well better win, or we will lose our country.

Actually it was Newt who shilled for Romney. Look up the Sheldon Adelson connections to learn the truth. Newt’s campaign died in Florida but became bitter and refused to bow out when Rick picked up steam.

It would take more research to see if that claim is correct either.

But I don’t remember having anyone forced down my throat and can’t think of any other FReepers who did.

Did you?

You’re both wrong.

:)

The combination of a weak field and lack of unity in opposition to Romney resulted in Romney’s nomination.

Yes, the Republican Establishment (Boehnor, Rove, or whoever) dictated that it will be Romney. Boehnor not so much but Rove, et.al., said let’s just stop this and put Romney up while Santorum and Newt were still in. You don’t need to post to me because I am voting for Romney, even if he chooses Satan as V.P. Nothing matters anymore but to get the Muslim out of there before we have Sharia Law. Whatever.

Herman Cain was strong at one point of time. Santorum deliberately contributed to the lack of unity.

Even if I accept Cain as a ‘strong candidate’ that still leaves the lack of unity in opposition to Romney.

And everyone who remained in the field contributed to this lack.

Heck, FReepers were far from united on any alternative to Romney.

I think it was Thomas Sowell who, very early in the race, that unless the others drop out and unite their support behind one NotRomney candidate, Romney will win.

Nothing changed and that’s what happened. There weren’t any surprises.

Newt shilled for Cain.

True, but in Santorum's case, it was intentional. Besides, he was never in it to win it. He did not even file the papers in some states. It was clear that his intent was to raise his profile and then join Romney as the VP candidate should the need arise.

Absolutely...
C’mon Mitt...be bold and go for the gold...
If not, you may run the risk of McCaining this where true conservatives will sit it out again...
Just sayin’

Newt Gringrich gave us Romney. After not winning more than 5 states he should have stepped aside and supported Santorum. Now Gringrich and Santorum give Romney support.

Santorum deliberately contributed to the lack of unity

...for the sole purpose of helping Romney win the nomination.

What kind of people who claim to be conservatives would actually follow this man and believe him (or claim to believe him) after having compared Romney to Ronald Reagan and called Romney "a real conservative in 2008?

1) Either you are stupid and do not look into the history of a candidate before throwing your support behind them.

OR

2) You're a Romney supporter and post articles in a political forum where liberals and RINOs are not tolerated so you go underground and pretend to be a Santorum supporter knowing that Santorum will give us Romney in the end.

Nice graphic. Final count: Romney- 37 states, Santorum- 11 states, Gingrich- 2 states. Add 6 to Romney's totals if you want to count his sweep of DC and the outlying territories.

Still, the momentum was on Santorum's side in February. He may very well have turned it around if Gingrich had shown the grace to stand down after his loss in Florida.

Then, there's Ron Paul, who scooped up most of the delegates in Minnesota and Maine without winning either.

Here’s your VP nominee.

You really want to lose this thing to Obama, don't you?

Exactly! Santorum and Romney are both part of the Karl Rove gang.

You're in denial. Santorum was not in it to win it for him. His job was to help Romney.

Santorum never believed that he would get enough support to even come close to win. He was feeding off the dumbest of the party who easily forget that he called Romney "a real conservative" only a few years back, endorsed Arlen, and compared Mittens to Ronald Reagan in 2004.

He knew the only people that would support him would be those not informed OR Romney supporters ashamed to admit they support Romney so they join in on the Santorum scam.

To me, the uninformed Republican voters gave us Romney, and Newton Gingrich played easily into that scenario, particularly in AZ, MI, and OH.

Correction: Santorum compared Mittens to Ronald Reagan in 2008
