Bloomberg is currently accepting proposals for the apartments, which will be located on E 27th Street and First Avenue in Kips Bay. The apartments would help young professionals find appropriate housing in the city while they start their careers.
The craziest thing about these 300-square-foot apartments (which are about the size of half a subway car) is that they will cost around $2,000 a month to rent.
Under current zoning laws, all apartments must be at least 400 square feet, but Bloomberg said he plans to change the zoning laws to make the new micro-units legal.

Seems to be about the size of a Microtel “suite”. Stayed in one of those in Carolina for about $60/night with tax. Same rate as the NY apts.
Gracie Mansion at 15000 sq ft is 50 times this size...

My first apartment was an “efficiency” that was probably not a helluva lot larger than that.
It was in Ohio, and my rent was about 1/8 of what this article quotes. Since I was working all the time and just used it to sleep did not really bother me.

I don’t mind studio apartment life - I just don’t like billionaires telling us we have to live in them and THEY can live in their palatial mansions.
There are lot of Soviet apartment blocks like that - all the same with no real privacy.
On the other hand after living in such conditions for a few years the inhabitants would have really bad cases of agoraphobia and be unable to live a rural lifestyle.
The Democrat dream would be achieved. The peasantry would live in tight easily controlled quarters and the gentry would have all of the fresh air they could desire.
If you have ever watched the movie ‘The Fifth Element’ you will get an idea of the lifestyle.
To be fair, its for singles. But there was a time in America, entire generations of families were born and raised in “shoebox” apartments and no one complained. We’ve gotten spoiled.
Yes, I believe you are correct in many ways. I remember a chart that showed the average size of an American house over the last couple of hundred years. The sizes go up and down according to the levels of national prosperity.
And I’ve personally lived in such tight quarters before. It was semi-voluntary as it was what I could afford at the time. And to be fair, in New York City such apartments would primarily be used only to sleep in as the inhabitants would spend most of their time out in the city either working, recreating, etc.
I personally don’t want to live that way again though. And to those who do... More power to you I guess.
NY City is ground zero for PC group think. I know many young people who have moved there after our university days, and 20 years later, their experiences, values and outlook on life are all incredibly similar. Bloomberg knows his town needs new drones and inductees to serve the machine. Does a 300 foot box really sound that attractive though while attending indoctrination camp?

The issue isn't about forcing people into 300 sq ft domiciles. The issue is that it's illegal to build or live in one if you want to. Free country, remember? or are some here too young/senile to remember?
There's the whole "tiny house" industry serving people who WANT compact space. Prime example is a popular 100 sq ft house:

My wife’s walkin closet is 120 sq ft alone.
My motor home is 7’ x 20’, and the front 3’ feet are taken up by the driving compartment. These don’t seem very different than motor homes.
None were super fancy or in exclusive areas; all were modest and in nice areas, generally close to schools. We had the freedom to choose and the market had the variety to meet our needs throughout the family's evolution.
I have no problem with micro-apartments being allowed. I have a problem with them being mandated.
