A photograph of a smiling woman in a Cudahy nightclub brandishing two handguns and wearing a councilman's badge may have played a role in Sheriff Lee Baca's decision to recall about 200 badges the department gave to local politicians.
Baca's decision came two weeks after the FBI arrested three Cudahy city officials on bribery charges, and in support of those charges, the U.S. attorney's office released the photo.
One command-level sheriff's official briefed on the badge recall said the move was prompted by the revelation in Cudahy. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore, however, said that the timing was a coincidence and that a 2007 state attorney general's warning prompted the call to return the badges.
Asked why it took more than four years for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department to take action on the attorney general's legal opinion, Whitmore replied, "That's a good question." The emergence of the Cudahy photo is the latest in a series of incidents in which official-looking credentials given to civilians by law enforcement agencies have come under scrutiny.
Critics have long said badges and identification cards appeared to be rewards for political contributions and had the potential for abuse.

She should be arrested for poor muzzle control.
Aren’t guns in a bar illegal (unless you’re a PO)?
Notice how there’s people around, not running away. Odds are she had a few; the magazine is in the semi-auto, and I wouldn’t doubt there are rounds in the cylinder in the revolver.
Amazing how people are calm in an outrageously stupid stunt like taking this photo, but once you talk about concealed carry in an area with a lot of hoplophobes, they go crazy.
I guess they don’t need no stinking badges.
I wonder why the bimbette’s eyes are blacked out.
No, not quite. More like 32, 34.
LOL! First thought that came to my mind too!
Depends. Maybe in California where the story is from, but in Virginia it is perfectly legal; concealed AND open carry.
I’d let her hold my gun.
If LA doesn’t quit giving away badges, they will be the next city to have to declare bankruptcy.
She's got some big guns, I must say...
Yeah, I bet none her her acquaintances have any idea who is in that picture.
Oh, good point!
Probably wouldn’t recognize her with clothes on anyway.
Bimbette looks Hispanic. If bimbette turns out to be an illegal alien (and this legally prohibited from having a gun), and Boca gave her a badge, then he's in DEEP trouble.
Ah! Then there's that!
Then, the blacked-out eyes wouldn't matter, I guess, since it's not the eyes "they" look at... :-/
