Boeing to arm Embraer's Super Tucano fighter

(Reuters) - Brazil's Embraer is announcing plans on Tuesday for Boeing Co to supply a new weapons system for its light attack fighter, strengthening its offer in a fiercely contested bid for a U.S. Air Force contract in Afghanistan.

The new weapons system will offer longer-range "smart" bombs guided by laser and GPS, Embraer said. The company will provide details of the new system, first reported in the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, at the Farnborough Airshow later in the day.

With the Boeing weapons system on its Super Tucano fighter, Embraer aims to bolster its bid for a $355 million Air Force contract. The contract is for 20 light air support planes for the Afghan military's counterinsurgency missions.

Embraer and privately held partner Sierra Nevada won the contract in a prior round of bidding that the Air Force scrapped earlier this year after a lawsuit by rival Hawker Beechcraft.

An Embraer spokesman said the company's latest bid last month [ID:nL1E8G8FSO] included the Boeing weapons system.

Boeing's new role as subcontractor on the Super Tucano reinforces growing ties between the U.S. and Brazilian

With this development, Patty Murray will now support the Super Tucano bid.

I wouldn’t exactly call the Tucano a fighter. Maybe a light ground support aircraft? It would definitely be an A-something, not an F-something.

“Afghan military’s counterinsurgency missions. “

So often we hear this term ‘insurgent’.

What is an ‘insurgent’ ? Isn’t that a label that all governments use to describe anyone who attacks them for running a police state dictatorship ?

Here in the US, they (DOJ,DHS,FBI,CIA,ATF,DEA) now say if you believe in the Constitution, you are an insurgent.

From an article at The Blaze:
The aircraft’s structure is corrosion-protected and the side-hinged canopy has a windshield capable of withstanding a bird strike at 270 kts.

Not sure why one needs to worry about bird strikes on the canopy with a single engine nose-mounted prop. By the time the bird gets to the canopy, the prop has already turned it into Chicken McNuggets.

The news media call all military aircraft “fighter jets.” I remember one time a reporter called the U.S. Navys S-3 Viking a “submarine jet fighter.” Once won dope in the media makes a mistake all the others repeat the error.

It appears we’re purchasing these for the Afghan military, which currently has jack squat. They should be happy with it. Of course, Taliban and Al Qaeda don’t even have air forces, so this is cutting edge in that neck of the woods. In a world without rifles, the man with a pistol is king.

This begs a broader question: Are our pilots being adequately trained in the art of dogfighting with submarines?

The Chinese just bought Hawker Beechcraft so either way, our tax payer dollars are going to one of our marxist adversaries.

The military seems to have a different idea.

Gosh, this is such a smart idea. EVERYONE knows that Afghan military is the bitter sworn enemy of the Taliban. After we leave they are going to have an unbelievable operational tempo!
The whole program is a joke and every General pushing it is a liar. They know it is a joke to pretend the afghans are on our side. The Afghan military does what they do solely because of us. The Afghan military has attacked and murdered our men countless times. Once it was an Afhgan pilot.

The minute we leave, they will stop all hostilities except the tribal crap. The Taliban will be brought into the government. The ‘super’ tucanos will be junk inside of 6 months.

The goal here is that defense contractors, and procurement officers get a project, that lines the pockets of a foreign company, and is paid for with borrowed Chinese money. We are BROKE. We do not have money to waste on the fantasy that these vermin share our goals.

This program contributes nothing to Americas well being. It would do more good for America to send 35,000 couples on a $5k vacation, than to spend 355,000,000 of borrowed money, to buy the enemy some planes they are incapable and unwilling to use.
These are muslims of the worst sort. They sell boys, sodomy is rampant, they murder and abuse women, and they are the worlds leading supplier of heroin.

This program is the densest stupid I’ve ever seen. If they are keen to waste money on programs like this, buy me a Cessna172, or a glider maybe. At least I am not an enemy of America.
