John Lennon meets Paul McCartney (55 years ago today!)

On the afternoon of 6 July 1957 the Quarrymen skiffle group played at the garden fete of St Peter's Church, Woolton, Liverpool.

The performance took place on a stage in a field behind the church. In the band were John Lennon (vocals, guitar), Eric Griffiths (guitar), Colin Hanton (drums), Rod Davies (banjo), Pete Shotton (washboard) and Len Garry (tea chest bass).

The group arrived on the back of a lorry. As well as music, there were craft and cake stalls, games of hoop-la, police dog demonstrations and the traditional crowning of the Rose Queen. The fete was a highlight of the year for the residents of the sleepy Liverpool district.

The entertainment began at two p.m. with the opening procession[snip]

That evening the group were due to play again, minus Colin Hanton, this time at the Grand Dance in the church hall on the other side of the road. They were due on stage at 8pm, and admission to the show, in which the Quarrymen alternated on stage with the George Edwards Band, was two shillings.

While setting up their equipment to play, the Quarrymen's sometime tea-chest bass player, Ivan Vaughan, introduced the band to one of his classmates from Liverpool Institute, the 15-year-old Paul McCartney.

This historic occasion was the first time McCartney met John Lennon, a year his senior. McCartney wore a white jacket with silver flecks, and a pair of black drainpipe trousers.

The pair chatted for a few minutes, and McCartney showed Lennon how to tune a guitar - the instruments owned by Lennon and Griffiths were in G banjo tuning. McCartney then sang Eddie Cochran's Twenty Flight Rock and Gene Vincent's Be-Bop-A-Lula, along with a medley of songs by Little Richard.

Two years ago we toured Liverpool and all the Beatles haunts. We went to The Casbah and met Pete Best’ brother, went to the Cavern Club and all the important sites. The most interesting was going inside Paul’s family home and John’s aunt’s house where he lived for several years. I had always heard John referred to as the “Posh” Beatle. The reason was that his house was the only one that had indoor plumbing. The other three had outhouses. After they returned from doing the Ed Sullivan show the first time, Paul went back to his dad’s house with no indoor plumbing.

Nothing beats Billy Preston on “Get Back”.

Boy - I hope you didn’t lay down good money for that CD! Although the group and the title of the CD is cool. More suitable for framing than listening IMHO.

No doubt. Preston was probably more technically skilled on the keys than any of the real Beatles were on their instruments. He didn’t have their songwriting talents, but together, they made a dynamite combination.

No way, I just heard it on the interwebs. It’s an interesting piece of history, but most of it is pretty bad listening. I did like the Sam Cooke medley at the end though, as sloppy as it was.

I read a funny story about that guy. Apparently, he decided to quit the skiffle band at one point, because he wasn’t into it anymore. Lennon took the washboard and smashed it over his head. He ended up joining back up with them for the next show, but they had to fix the busted washboard so he could play.

John Lennon meets Paul McCartney (55 years ago today!)

When maudlin (exemplified by Number 9 Dream) tempered saccharin (exemplified by Silly Love Song), the result was really great. Of course, it's possible that they were all following their own emotional frequencies that happened to coincide for greatness before desynchronizing and petering out into moroseness (John), silliness (Paul), Krishna-worship (George), and "hey, what the hell happened to my career?" (Ringo).
