1965's "Here Right Now" was one of the first Spencer Davis singles released with Steve credited as sole songwritter. His admiration for Ray Charles is on full display as he emulates his mentor with a uniquely soulful vocal, barrelhouse style piano and distinctly sizzling Ray Charles organ licks. The song exhibits a mature feel for the blues that seem far beyond his years and an appeal to blues enthusiasts of all ages. It was this appreciation for the blues that led to his life-long friendship and collaborations with Eric Clapton. This song, while missing the pop charts entirely, propelled him to his stature as a true bluesman in the British Blues scene. Those early tours with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King and Sonny Boy Williamson had nutured a bles foundation that was nothing short of remarkable.

It's worth noting that Steve's 1965 revival of this traditional blues tune is the basis for Joe Bonamassa's fantastic "Ballad of John Henry" (<-link). The Blues has come a long way in half a century, but, guys like Joe build soaring towers today on solid foundations laid long ago.
